The University of Wollongong holds an annual welcome event to the City of Wollongong for the 2700 international students who commence their studies at UOW's Australian campuses each year. Managed by the Illawarra Committee for International Students, a non-profit community organisation funded by the University of Wollongong, Welcome to Wollongong is the peak event in the Committee’s annual calendar, designed to integrate international students into life in Wollongong, make friends and interact with members of the local Illawarra community.
The Committee is run by volunteers, many of whom are local community members as well as current international students.
Hundreds of newcomers gathered at the University Hall on Thursday 17 March. Students, staff and their families were treated to a performance by students from UOW, experienced Australian cuisine and learned about the Clubs and Societies and International Student Programs on offer to help them settle in to life at UOW. The commencing students were officially welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Wollongong as well as members of the University’s Senior Executive
