A Warm WelcomeThe GBA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Rupert Kindersley as Executive Director of the Association. Rupert started in his new role on April 15th and John McMullen has kindly taken over as President for the next year.Fisheries Act AmendmentsBill C-68 has been drafted and the First Reading referred to the standing committee on Fisheries and Oceans. GBA is in the process of reviewing this welcome piece of legislation, which will strengthen the Fisheries Act and is generally beneficial to the protection of fish habitat etc. in Georgian Bay. Boost in Budget for Great LakesThe U.S. House and Senate have passed the fiscal year 2018 budget. The budget will now head to the White House to be signed by the president and contains strong funding for core Great Lakes restoration priorities. Blacklegged Ticks Found in Bay AreaBlacklegged ticks, which may transmit Lyme disease, were found in Awenda Provincial Park in 2017. Sampling was conducted in the park. The sampled ticks did not test positive for Lyme Disease, but the presence of blacklegged ticks indicates an increased risk of contracting this dangerous disease.
