EUROCONTROL - EUROCAE High Level Meeting 28 August 2019, EUROCONTROL, Brussels A EUROCAE delegation, led by the the Council Chair, Jean-Christophe Albouy, had a very constructive meeting with the EUROCONTROL team led by Director General Eamonn Brennan about our collaboration today and tomorrow. EUROCONTROL clearly explained their priorities, with a focus on the European ATM Network and how to implement improvements to address the current and future challenges. A strong, efficient European Network needs high quality, effective standards and we agreed together that we will put even more effort into our activities and our collaboration, so we keep the service level to the aviation community at the highest possible level.
The scope of collaboration with EUROCONTROL goes beyond the ATM Network and we also addressed areas like training, the experimental center and standard validation, the Network Manager’s unique role and needs, how we are making use of each other’s premises, the standards developed in both organisations, exchange of information, making use of each other’s material and therefore IPR and finally how we are coordinating our representation globally. We are currently updating the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between our two organisations in light of the commitments made for even more and better support with the goal of having an efficient, reliable European ATM Network based on high quality, effective standards.
EUROCAE meets CleanSky Joint Undertaking On 28 August 2019, EUROCAE Secretary General, Christian Schleifer and Director Technical Programme, Anna von Groote met with high level representatives of the CleanSky Joint Undertaking, Vittorio Selmin and Antonello Marino. The main objective of the meeting was to understand the CleanSky priorities and challenges and to discuss current relevant standardisation activities and potential for closer cooperation between EUROCAE and the CleanSky programme in the future. Clean Sky is the largest European research programme developing
innovative, cutting-edge technology aimed at reducing CO2, gas emissions and noise levels produced by aircraft.
Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, Clean Sky contributes to strengthening European aero-industry collaboration, global leadership and competitiveness. Many of our members are also engaged with the CleanSky programme and there are numerous opportunities for closer engagement, which will be further explored in the near future. EUROCAE participation to the IATA European Regional Coordination Group EUROCAE participated the IATA European Regional Coordination Group RCP 2/19 on 29 August 2019 in Madrid. EUROCAE Secretary General, Christian Schleifer introduced EUROCAE, the current and future work programme and promoted standardisation for more airline participation in our working groups. In presenting different examples on how and why EUROCAE develops standards for different solutions, Christian triggered the discussion on how airlines could be motivated to increase their participate to the standardisation activity.
The EUROCAE presentation complemented and linked into other presentations made at the meeting, such as the regulatory update made by EASA and the introduction and plans of the newly appointed EUROCONTROL Network Manager Director, the updates on CO2 emission reduction and the integration of airports into the Network. EUROCAE cooperation agreement with IATA has proved to be a key instrument, allowing cross participation of the members of both organisations to different events and meetings.
Kick off meeting:
EUROCAE WG-114
Artificial Intelligence27-28 August 2019, EUROCAE, Saint-Denis The kick-off meeting of WG-114 took place on 27-28 August at EUROCAE premises. The meeting was very successful, gathering over 30 experts representing all aviation stake-holders: Airbus Defence & Space, Airbus Helicopters, Collins Aerospace, Copenhagen Airports A/S, Dassault Aviation, DLR, DFS, Diehl Aerospace, EASA, Elbit Systems Ltd., Electronic Navigation Research Institute, ENAV SPA, EUROCONTROL, European Defence Agency, Frequentis AG, GMV Aerospace and Defence S.A.U., Groupe ADP, Honeywell International, Indra Sistemas, Lilium GmbH, ONERA, SAE International, Searidge Technologies, SITTI, Skyguide, STAC,
Thales, Thales LAS, Think Research, ZAL Center for Applied Aeronautical Research, etc. The new working group 114 is positioned to help guiding safe and successful adoption of AI technologies in Aeronautical Systems by developing industry consensus standards within EUROCAE.
The working group will evaluate key applications for AI usage within aeronautical systems, with a focus on AI embedded into aerial vehicle and ground equipment. WG-114 will then propose standards for implementation and certification. The following deliverables are currently envisaged: - Report on Qualification process of aeronautical systems implementing AI: Statement of concerns; and
- Process standard for Qualification of aeronautical systems
implementing AI: Development standard.

In memoriam Stefano PorfiriIt is with great sadness that we learned about the passing of our very dear colleague and friend, Stefano Porfiri. His sudden death at an early age leaves a large gap to fill. He was not only a knowledgeable and strong leader and partner, but also a charming and positive person. He lead with great energy Leonardo’s efforts and influenced the ATM policy in Europe towards modernisation and increased effectiveness. As the sad news emerged, EUROCAE Secretary General, Christian Schleifer said:
“Stefano was a big supporter of our work at EUROCAE and he well understood the bigger picture of aviation. In his leadership position,
Stefano ensured that Leonardo is actively participating and contributing to the EUROCAE standard development process, to the advancement of standards in Europe and beyond. His dedication proved exemplary whether for SES, Leonardo, and EUROCAE topics. I will miss our regular exchanges and mostly our friendship”. Our thoughts are with his family in these difficult times.
Aviation Software StandardsWith airborne and ground-based aviation systems increasingly interconnected, the landscape for critical systems software is changing.Whether you are an ANSP specifying or accepting a system, the person responsible for system maintenance, or a supplier at the cutting edge of software product development, you will need to understand the standards options
available to you, how to apply them, and the impact on costs. Join our next training session of Aviation Software Standards, based on your availability, and experience a practical and interactive approach to the subject matter, drawing on the trainers’ extensive experience in both aviation safety and critical systems software development.
The course outline is available here. The next sessions are planned as follows:
Aviation Cybersecurity Training Benefits of attending - Participants will gain access to the tools and understanding to use available standards to manage cyber risk in an aviation context in a standards-led way.
- ED-201 brought to life with classroom scenarios and exercises.
- Learn best practice on auditing and
certification.
- Instructor a leading authority on aviation cybersecurity and a certified lead auditor for ISO27001.
- Sharing experiences with colleagues from other aviation stakeholders/countries.
- Extensive course handouts including ED-201, ED-202, ED-203A, ED-204, ED-205.
- Ideal learning environment at EUROCAE HQ in Saint-Denis (Paris area, France).
- Certificate on completion of the course.
The next sessions are planned as follows:
