Click here Vol 24 No 18 25 Jan 2019 Senior Cup Semi-FinalCongratulations to The High School Senior 1 hockey team which succeeded in qualifying for the semi-final of the Leinster Hockey Association Schoolgirls Senior Cup last week. The team played very well against strong opposition, attacking hard and defending with all their might right up until the final whistle blew. Although the game did not go our way, we enjoyed a great afternoon at Grange Road with supporters attending in huge numbers chanting popular High School songs throughout. It was a thrilling match that kept us gripped until the very last moment. We wish our senior girls every success in future games representing The High School.Jones Father Godfrey CupOn Monday the Junior Cup team played against CBS Naas in the quarter-final of the Father Godfrey Cup. Despite their resounding victory in the first round fixture this time around the result didn't go their way. That said there was a well-earned try scored in the first half by Marcus Empey converted by Eli Breen. The boys were cheered on to the end by enthusiastic supporters who were proud to see the team come so far in this competition. We look forward to seeing the team play in the Plate competition and wish them every success in all future games. 4G Rugby Pitch DedicationOn 18 January 2019 The High School's new 4G rugby pitch was officially opened by retired teachers Mr Cole and Mr Fennell and dedicated to them for their distinguished contribution to rugby at The High School. There will be a further series of events taking place in the coming weeks to mark the opening of the new pitch. Gaisce HikeOn Sunday 20 January Form 4 pupils travelled to the Wicklow mountains for a Gaisce hike. The climb was challenging but worth it once we reached the summit and could enjoy the stunning views. From there we marvelled at what we had achieved. This was our third practice hike and we have become gradually more confident in our ability to tackle increasingly difficult terrain. Growing Up at DanumWhile on a History tour of the river Dodder we met Ms Rachel Bewley whose family used to own the grounds of The High School. Mr Irwin invited her to the school to speak about her memories of growing up on the former Bewley Estate. She told us about how she used to tend the cattle that grazed on the fields around Danum which are now our sports fields. She described how Rathgar looked in those days and what life was like here. She recounted how her grandfather started the Bewley’s café in Dublin using coffee he had brought back from a visit to a coffee plantation in Africa. She explained how she walks by the Dodder every day to watch the wildlife and she gave a photographic presentation describing life along the river. The talk
was very interesting and I would like to thank Ms Bewley for taking the time to come to the school and share her memories of growing up at Danum. Yeats WordsThe newest addition to the art collection at The High School is in the Library. What might appear to be random words painted on a wall is in fact a work of art by Alan Phelan. The words come together as sentences when you follow a particular colour revealing quotes from one of HSD’s most famous past pupils WB Yeats. The mural was painted with the help of Form 4 pupils in late December whose support was essential as the letters were painted using a giant vinyl adhesive stencil. The colours used reflect the ink dyes used in regular printing – hence cyan, magenta, yellow, and black were chosen because of its location in the Library. Alan was commissioned by Dublin City Council in 2016 to complete a similar project for the renovated Kevin Street Library made from painted steel letters which was installed early last year. Thanks to Annie Sun, Amiee Merriman, Tom Wang, Roger Sun, Eve Shannon, and Sophie Deregnieaux for their help. Hockey VictoriesLast week saw some great hockey wins for The High School. The Juniors won 3-1 against St Kilian's School with goals from Sam Maxwell, Luke Fitzpatrick, and Tom Whelan. The Minors won 3-1 against Sutton Park School with goals from Sam Maxwell, Oscar Maguire, and Ben Pasley. The Seniors won 3-0 with all goals scored by James Coman. Rugby SuccessThere were some fantastic results last Saturday for The High School. Our Form 2 B team defeated St Michael's College 27-19, Senior 2nds/3rds defeated Terenure College, and the Form 1 team narrowly lost out to Gonzaga College. Well done all involved! Thanks to all the supporters who came along to cheer the boys on. Parents' Study Skills SeminarThe Parents' Association hosted a very successful session entitled "Study Skills & Your Child" recently. There was a great turn-out with parents of all year groups in attendance. Dates for your Diary
