Our students are enhancing their design-thinking, movement & coordination, art, and music skills through participation in programs such as STEM, comics, karate, coding, yoga, art, and musical theater. A Message from our Interim CEOMany of those that have gotten to know me have come to regard my daily attire as a bit mundane, predictable, even drab. Normally dark colors, for reasons we can discuss on another day. So for some, it came a bit as a surprise that in starting last week I had a bright (for me) blue shirt on. The reason for this is that I was celebrating World Autism Awareness Day 2018 on Monday, April 2 to kick-off Autism Awareness Month. So what is there to celebrate? As the father of a daughter, and the brother to individuals diagnosed with autism, there is a great deal to celebrate. First, the progress of recent research in the field of autism is supporting the advancement of those with autism. Next, the public awareness of autism is leading to new opportunities for those with autism -- helping to disband many myths about its cause and what people with autism can achieve. Finally, I am celebrating that, with our increased knowledge and awareness, we are able to do more in our educational settings to support and advance those diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum. I hope that you will take a few moments to learn more about autism at the World Autism Awareness Day website. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to explore more about autism and increase our collective understanding of how we can better support all of our students. Together we will develop community-minded students who are active, creative, empathetic, confident, and ready to lead our global society. Sincerely, Yearbook PhotosPreparation and organization for the 2017-2018 Urban Discovery Academy Yearbook is underway! If you’ve snapped any yearbook worthy photos while attending field trips, school events, or visits to your child’s classroom, we encourage you to drop them into this folder for review by the yearbook committee and thank you for your support. Input from all members of the community is essential to the School Advisory Council objectives. We encourage you to attend the open meetings or to contact the School Advisory Council members with concerns you feel need to be addressed. While at times difficult, open and free discourse in both the meetings and digital forums is essential to our efforts to develop active, creative, empathetic, and confident students.
