Kia ora,
We're all about the royal news this week. No, not that royal news.
Today Japan's Emperor Akihito will step down after 30 years on the Chrysanthemum Throne. The 85-year-old will be succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Naruhito, whose enthronment will usher in a new
era.
In our lead story this week, we spoke with former ambassador to Japan Ian Kennedy about the legacy of the Heisei era and what we can expect going forward into the new Reiwa era.
Meanwhile in Thailand, King Vajiralongkorn will finally be crowned on May 4 (he's been Thailand's official monarch since 2016). It will be the first and probably only coronation most Thais will see in their lifetime.
