Water is an integral part of life, community and wellbeing. To help protect and celebrate the importance of water, particularly drinking water, in your community, the First Nations Health Authority Drinking Water Safety Program would like to invite First Nations communities in BC to submit a proposal for a community water awareness day event!

BC has declared a public health emergency in response to the massive increase in overdose deaths seen in BC in the past two years – and this trend is accelerating as the days go by. BC has seen over 300 overdose deaths since January alone. Opioid drugs such as fentanyl are the deadly cause of this spike.

International Overdose Awareness Day is an annual, global event which aims to increase awareness and reduce the stigma around drug overdose. The symbol for the Day is a silver badge. It symbolizes awareness of overdose and its effects. 

Prior to August 31st the FNHA will be providing silver badges to interested First Nations community members and FNHA staff. FNHA regional staff are working with communities to distribute badges.

The First Nations Food Systems Project, funded by FNHA and administered by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, is currently operating in 25 First Nations in the Province. Participating First Nations receive a grant of $5,000/year for start-up or expansion of community gardens.

In addition to grants, the project provides training in aspects of fresh food production and preservation. The project also assists interested communities in formulation of Community Food Plans to achieve food security in the community.

Communities that are not currently in the project and are interested in starting or expanding their community gardens and/or developing a Community Food Plan are asked to submit an Expression of Interest before November 30, 2016 to Project Manager Jammi Kumar at jammi@agrifirst.ca or by phone at 778-229-9997.

Postpartum doulas provide support and education to new mothers and her family during the first three months of a baby’s life. Doulas act as both mentors and guides as they help families care for a
new baby.

FNHA will cover all travel, accommodations, and food costs for two applicants per community. This event will take place Sept. 19-23 in Vancouver.

The fourth installment of ‘Research Rounds’ describes two important elements of research ethics: ‘Privacy and Confidentiality’, and how these principles protect against disclosing sensitive health information and exposing the identity of survey participants.

Bridgeview, a neighborhood in Surrey, is home to a large population of Aboriginal people, and can feel quite isolated for some. The Bridgeview Community Centre, in collaboration with the City of Surrey, saw an opportunity to bring local residents together to build a sense of community and to learn about Aboriginal culture. Not only that, but this event marked the first National Aboriginal Day celebration hosted within the City of Surrey!

Any day that includes a Shwooshim (Soapberry/Indian Ice Cream) whip-off is a good day. On June 21, Lytton First Nation, Oregon Jack Creek, and Skuppah First Nation joined hands with the Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council to celebrate as part of the National Aboriginal Day of Wellness initiative. Approximately 200 Elders, children, men, women, families, and community members gathered at Pasulko Lake to share a meal, stories, activities and time together.
