It was lead by the Fiordland Conservation Trust and sponsored by the Fiordland Lobster Company. Pāteke/brown teal are one of the world's rarest waterfowl and have been absent from Dusky Sound for over a century. Because of its large size (c21,000 ha) and possum and rat free status, Resolution Island has a critical role in the success of Tamatea/Dusky Sound restoration project. Mitre Peak Cruises supports Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary Totally Tourism Ltd, owner of Mitre Peak Cruises, has entered into a new partnership with us. Mitre Peak Cruises prides itself on a small boat scenic experience of spectacular Milford Sound and wanted to help us promote awareness of the area’s native birds. During July and August 2017 they will donate $5 to the Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary for each ticket sold on its coach-cruise-coach package (ex Te Anau). Little spotted kiwi have a new home on Anchor Island Fiordland Lobster Company staff were involved in the release of twelve little spotted kiwi on to Anchor Island this month. This has been the culmination of a three year project lead by the Fiordland Conservation Trust and sponsored by the Fiordland Lobster Company, that has seen a total of 40 birds relocated to the island. Anchor Island is part of the Tamatea/Dusky Sound restoration project. This special island was declared pest free in 2005 and is now home to some of our most endangered birds, including one third of the world's kākāpō population. Get involved Build your own wētā 'motel' Earn a Kiwi Guardians medal by creating a wētā 'motel' in your backyard! It's a home for wētā to crawl into, to protect them from being eaten by introduced predators like rats, stoats, cats and hedgehogs. Fancy working in Fiordland this summer?
