Click here Vol 24 No 20 15 Feb 2019 Leinster Rugby at The High SchoolThis week Leinster Rugby visited The High School for an open training session on our new 4G pitch as part of a season of events to mark the opening of this wonderful new facility at the school. A sense of excitement throughout the school community was palpable as pupils and teachers gathered to watch the pre-Zebre training session. The players were very friendly and stopped to sign autographs and take photographs with pupils following the session. Then senior pupils had the opportunity to meet Leinster contact skills coach Hugh Hogan (HSD, 1993-99) and participate in an intensive training session with him. It was a wonderful afternoon and brought home to us just what a world-class facility we have at our disposal. Leinster Senior Hockey League FinalCongratulations to The High School Senior 1 hockey team which played in the final of the Leinster Hockey Association Schoolboys Senior League on Wednesday against Wesley College. The teams were evenly matched throughout the game and made it to full-time with a nil-all score. Extra-time ended in stalemate so the teams faced each other in a one-on-one shoot out. Although luck was not on our side this time we still enjoyed a great afternoon at Corinthians Hockey Club with supporters attending en masse. We wish our senior boys every success in future games representing The High School and look forward to seeing our impressive senior team progress through the Cup in the weeks ahead. Leinster Minor Hockey League FinalLast week the Minor boys' hockey team defeated Newpark Comprehensive School 1-0 in the semi-final of the Leinster Schoolboys' Minor league. They have now secured a place in the league final which will take place in a few weeks' time. We warmly congratulate the team and wish them every success in the final! Leinster Badminton FinalThe High School qualified for the Leinster Under 16 Girls’ Badminton Finals last week. We put up a strong fight and won the final match of the competition. I am so proud of the achievement of a team that despite setbacks pressed on and showed skill and spirit along with wonderful sportsmanship in the face of adversity. I should like to offer Junior DebatingOn Saturday 26 January four pupils from Form 1 participated in a debating competition in Castleknock Community College. This was our first experience of debating at a competition and we really enjoyed it. On the day we got to debate very interesting topics including gender quotas in the Dáil and a ban on all artificial intelligence. We felt that these topics were very relevant. There were three main debates which everyone took part in and at the end there was a final debate for the best teams. We all got to watch this debate and it was very impressive – the winners get to go to Cambridge to represent Ireland! Overall it was a very enjoyable day and and we are all looking forward to taking part in another debating competition soon. Form 2 Study SkillsLast week pupils from Form 2 enjoyed a day-long study-skills workshop. Pupils learned how to manage their workload, timetabling, and mental stress. The importance of maintaining a healthy work-life Form 4 Cultural TripThere is no doubt that the past is full of mistakes that we need to be reminded of as well as cultural and technological achievements that deserve to be recognised. What better way to look at these past events than by going to a museum? How about going to two museums in one day which is exactly what Form 4 pupils did for their cultural outing on Wednesday 30 January? The first venue was the National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts and History at Collins Barracks. We were given a worksheet to complete which helped us retain some of the information provided. The second museum was National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology where Irish artefacts and treasures from all over the world are kept in pristine condition for future generations.
An interesting day was had by all. Oxbridge OfferWe offer our warmest congratulations to Andrew Canning who has received a conditional offer to read Engineering as an undergraduate at Magdalene College, Cambridge. It is a significant honour to be selected for this stage of the process and we wish him every success as he enters the highly competitive race for the small number of places on offer to read Engineering at Cambridge in 2019-20. Art Work-In-ProgressOur senior pupils studying Art and Design are busy putting the finishing touches to these beautiful batik pieces and colourful vignettes. Dates for your Diary
