Deliberately Feathered

By Kayla Misa

Winner of the Sweet July x Girls Write Now: Passing Down Our Stories Contest

"I can't keep lying to you about who I am. I'm queer," I whispered.
I watched his face turn into the sun, and he pressed his own rosary softly into my hands. He didn't need to say anything else; his silence rang brilliantly in the dark.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

Moment in Girls Write Now History

A Mentoring Snapshot from 2017

"At the end of our 3rd year together, my mentee Winkie was chosen to be the mentee co-host for one of the public readings, which were held in the New-York Historical Society auditorium. Each host spoke about her experience of Girls Write Now, and Winkie thanked me, her "wonderful mentor" in front of all those people. I was so excited and touched that I nearly dropped my phone. Winkie got a full-ride scholarship to Emory University and is now a PhD student in experimental psychology at UC Davis. I've been so proud of her!"
—Stephanie Golden, Mentor, 2017

Check out more Girls Write Now moments as we celebrate the release of our 25th anniversary book, Girls Write Now On the Art of the Craft: A Guide to Collaborative Storytelling.

Prompt of the Week

From Morgan Parker, Friday Night Salon Artist

How is your fake self different from your true self? What causes you to perform for your fake self? Write about an experience you've had in which you needed to perform a fake version of yourself or a time when you were able to be your true self.

Learn how vulnerability through writing can give way to a deeper examination of societal issues with poet and writer Morgan Parker, who just released You Get What You Pay For, her new book from Penguin Random House.
