A NET POSITIVE FUTURE FOR HAURAKI COROMANDEL

Hauraki Coromandel Destination Management Plan
Our community vision for tourism

The plan:

We have embarked on a compelling journey to make sure that tourism brings a better future for everyone in the region, while protecting all that we love about this place, our environment, our way of life.  Most people we asked felt that visitors are good for Hauraki Coromandel, but everyone agreed that tourism must go beyond merely doing no harm. It must evolve to give more than it takes - a net positive future for our environment, society and people.

How we wrote the plan:

Nobody knows this place like the people who call it home. We listened to how locals really feel about the future of tourism in their town and their aspirations for what tourism can become through the engagement process. Town workshops in 10 locations, industry and youth focus groups and online surveys gave us the vision, values and purpose for tourism. The guiding stars in our plan will focus all destination management actions. There were many ideas for work to be done on all scales (region-wide, localised and town-based) but the projects in this plan surfaced time and again. So that's where we will start, with this plan and these actions.

What's next: your assessment

We are sending you the draft plan for your evaluation by completing our survey after you have read the plan.

Consultation is not about making sure everyone gets what they want, and it is not about creating a grand (unworkable) compromise, but we do need your assessment. This plan will change as we learn and work together, reflecting a close and ongoing collaboration with all tourism partners, agencies and locals.

There are many projects that are already funded and underway - the repair and ongoing sustainability of our roads being the giant undertaking. This plan looks beyond what we know and requires us to commit to making decisions that truly lead to change. It will require collective courage to agree, find funding, stick to our mission, marshal resources that are already stretched and work with new partners and new situations. Courage to put our values first.

We have already changed the things we do in line with what we've learned so far about the power of regenerative travel.  We've made some new allies, and this plan will change as our communities do. We will need the support of powerful partners, but we know from all the astonishing community endeavours we heard about during the writing of this plan that the power for change comes from locals.
