As a child, rare moments were spent peeking from behind my mother’s bedroom door, watching as her fingers plucked sweet notes from violin strings, her bow hand moving rhythmically in the air. Her face was serene in a way I had rarely seen.
I memorized the graceful slope of her shoulder and the way her eyes shut as she lost herself in her music. I watched as greatness unfurled from her fingertips, and yearned to be a part of that peaceful world beyond the door frame. I wanted to be graced with those same gentle touches. I wanted her to adore me like she adored her strings. I wanted her to share her music with me. To see me—to look at me. But she never did.
Soon, those moments became fewer and farther between.
Soon, she’d pick up beer bottles instead of her bow.
Soon, a deep longing stirred within me, and with it, a growing rage.

Anarchist Fictions is accepting poetry for Issue No. 3, on the theme of prisons and abolition. Submit up to 5 pages total (any number of poems within that limit). Contributors are paid $20 CAD per poem plus one contributor copy. Simultaneous submissions are welcome; to submit, attach your poems as a .doc or .docx to an email with "ISSUE 3 POETRY SUBMISSION" as the subject line.

Slam Poetry Coach
826 Boston seeks a dynamic, experienced spoken word poet to serve as Slam Poetry Coach for the Writers' Room at the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science (O'B) in Roxbury, developing writers and performers in grades 9–12. The position runs September 22, 2026 through May 27, 2027 (with a mid-year break December 21–January 1), with possible renewal the following year. The O'B is one of Boston's three college-preparatory public exam schools, serving more than 1,500 students through 826 Boston's Writers' Room program.
