European Languages Week

This week we celebrated European Language Week at The High School. Corridors and noticeboards were decorated with flags and homemade posters representing the three languages taught at The High School.  We have had the pleasure of enjoying a multitude of events. Firstly, pupils entertained us with songs and music in various languages. Daimee Ng (Form 5) played the Gavotte en Roudeau from Partita No. 3 in E major for solo violin by J. S. Bach having introduced the piece in German.  We also had the pleasure of hearing Emily Pryce (Form 6) singing “Cet été- là” by French artist Louane. Finally, Tirzah Hutchinson Edgar (Form 5) gave us a beautiful rendition of “La vie en rose” by Edith Piaf. What a treat! These can be viewed and heard on MS Stream and SoundCloud.  We also enjoyed a series of interviews carried out by my colleagues. Ms Maher interviewed Ruth Ó Laoide - European Commission, Aisling Ó Dhonnabhain - freelance translator, and Emma Power - Univeristy of Leipzig. Ms May interviewed Evan Horan from Blinderfilms. These interviews gave us a great insight in the studying of languages and the careers opportunities they can bring along.  These can all be viewed on MS Stream.  As always the Library was awash with activities relating to languages. Many classes enjoying quizzes all week and some pupils will be expecting to win prizes!  It was a very successful week and one we always look forward to at the High School.  Well done, one and all!

Senior Play

Preparations for the Senior Play have begun! This year we are planning something extra special, involving a joint production involving pupils from Forms 5 and 6.  We practise every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.  On Wednesdays we work on designing the set.  So far it has been really enjoyable and we have become much closer as a group.  There is still time to join in the fun so if you are in Form 5 or 6 why not get involved?  If so please contact Mr Milofsky via MS Teams or in person.  We need people will all sorts of talents and interests so don't delay!  Watch this space in the coming weeks for further details.

Hockey News

Last Wednesday was a fantastic day for sport at The High School with boys playing hockey at all age groups.  Senior 1 and 2 teams played The King's Hospital and St Columba's College; Junior A, B, and C teams played The Kings Hospital, Sandford Park School, and St Columba’s College, respectively; three Minor teams played 8v8s against St Columba’s College; and three U13 teams played The King's Hospital in 8v8s.  All teams played some great hockey and more importantly had fun on the field.  For the Minor and U13 teams it was their first bus trip to a game.  This week we have qualified (beating Sandford Park School) for the All Ireland Schoolboys tournament which is running in a league format this year.  We also wish past pupils Evan Jennings (HSD, 2014-20), Alistair Empey (HSD, 2013-19), Ben Whelan (HSD, 2015-21) and current Form 5 pupil Ben Pasley the best of luck as they head off with Three Rock Rovers to play in the European Hockey League.

Hockey - Form 4

On Wednesday we played a match against St Columba's College. The first half was challenging but we played well.  In the second half we had a few short corners but we scored at the last five minutes.  The defenders and the goalkeeper
guarded the D and blocked every single goal. Overall it was a fun match to play and we are looking forward for a bright season with many more wins.

SCT Rugby

On 29 September the Senior Cup Team played its second game of the season in a hard fought contest against a challenging Templeogue College team.  We unfortunately lost 29-21.  We were so close to a victory but the clock was against us with the opposition getting a late try that sealed our fate.  Despite the result we had positives to take from the game as we continue to learn and develop as a team.  We all look forward to surmounting those challenges in the months ahead as the Senior Cup Team goes from strength to strength.

Student Council

This week the first Student Council meeting of the year took place.  Each form in the school has elected a representative and these pupils will gather throughout the year to discuss various school related issues.  Meetings are facilitated by teachers however the discussion is pupil led.  The main topic of this week’s meeting was the return to school and ensuring that guidance around Covid-19 is properly followed and clarified for everyone in the school.  The Student Council provides a great opportunity for pupils to learn how to express their opinions and is an example of democracy in action.  The Student Council gives the pupils of The High School a voice and shows how willing the school is to listen to their views.

Creative Writing

Interested in creative writing or journalism?  A new Creative Writing Club is being established at HSD for all budding writers.  We will meet on Mondays at 1.30pm in B21.  Feel free to bring your lunch (and a pen!).

Photography

As part of Transition Year Photography Module we have been exploring using the rule of thirds, symmetry, and patterns alongside unusual view points and perspectives.  Forced Perspective is a technique that creates an optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger, or smaller than it is.  A lot of planning and creative thinking went into these brilliant shots!
