KinderAs flu season nears, students in kindergarten are learning about germs and proper hand washing through a “hands on” experiment involving bread. One piece of bread was handled using sterile gloves, the second using washed hands, and the third was passed around for 24 kinders to touch with hands that were not freshly washed. The students are eager to discover what happens to the slices of bread over time. Fifth GradeThe 5th graders recently collaborated with Kate Goodson of PopArch on their Trimester 1 project: Pop Up Playground. Sixth and Seventh GradeStudents in 6th and 7th grade had the opportunity to participate in a 3-day Genetics lab workshop with the Salk Institute. Visual ArtsKinders drew the sun, plants, and flowers. Students in 3rd grade had fun creating art while learning about stained glass techniques. The 7th graders put the final touches on their cubism work. UDA Math NightOn Wednesday, October 18, from 5:30pm-7:00pm, we will be hosting our first family night: Math Night! Families will be informed about the work UDA teachers have been engaging in since the summer specifically around math, including: strategies, UDA's approach, and programs to help support students both in school and at home. We look forward to seeing you all. Please RSVP here. Hepatitis A Free Vaccination ClinicIn order to combat the spread of Hepatitis A, the San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency is offering free Hepatitis A testing and vaccinations at Central Library (330 Park Blvd, 92101). They are also offering free flu shots and a limited supply of hygiene kits available for free public distribution upon request. The Hepatitis A vaccine is not a school requirement for the state of California, so if your child has not received the vaccine, parents should strongly consider this option. The clinic is open from 2:00-5:00pm on the 2nd floor of the library (Room 222) on October 17, November 21, and December 19. Hepatitis A immunizations are also readily available at local CVS Minute Clinics (and probably other locations throughout San Diego - check with your healthcare provider). Given the serious outbreak of Hepatitis A in our immediate community, we strongly urge all of our families to ensure everyone is vaccinated right away. Performing ArtsMr. Baldan is looking to create a small theater lighting display along with a costume and prop collection. If you are able to help with carpentry or electrics, please reach out to him at bbaldan@urbansd.com. Costume donations of any variety may be dropped off at the Stage. Thank you! Annual FundWe hope you have had the time to consider giving to our Annual Fund. We have received a handful of donations so far; thank you so much for the generous contributions for our classrooms!
