Today TLC is leading and growing a statewide effort aimed at creating fundamental improvements in how Arizonans experience end-of-life care. Here we are sharing the high level review of the data and survey results from across Arizona to provide a snapshot perspective, complete with observations and recommendations for moving forward. First we have Medicare and hospice data. Inpatient days, Emergency Department visits, and ICU Days prior to death are opportunities for improved conversations about prognosis and treatment options the last year of life. In this survey 450+ Arizona physicians participated, 68% of which care for patients near their end of life. Both education for physicians on communication and public education on end-of-life care planning were identified as a need.
