Transition Update Organisational change Stage 1a Change Decisions for the Professional Services Project (PSP) were released on 31 October, after considering staff, student and stakeholder feedback received. The decisions relate to the following areas: Facilities, Property and Development, Flinders Living, Integrity, Legal and Risk and the Library. The decisions can be viewed via The 2025 Agenda web page. They explain how these areas will be structured and resourced to provide services to Colleges and the campus community that are more responsive and encourage better relationships and engagement across the University. Feedback on Stage 2 Change Proposals is under consideration, and decisions are expected by late November. Stage 2 Change Proposals were for the areas of Operations Support, Office of Communication and Engagement (OCE), Office of Graduate Research (OGR), Portfolio of the Vice-President and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) (VP&PVC-I), Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT), Research Development and Support (RDS), Student Administration and Flinders Connect and Student Recruitment. It is understandable that some staff may have concerns about uncertainty associated with change. People affected by the decisions are able to speak to someone confidentially by accessing support via the Employee Assistance Program. EAP can be contacted on 82012696 or staff can also share concerns and suggestions with their supervisor or with a People & Culture Business Partner. Flinders Pantry & Cafe In December, we’ll be starting works to refurbish the cafeteria dining room at Sturt. This will include new chairs, tables, and an overall refreshment of the space. There will also be collaborative and informal seating spaces, with more power points and USB charge facilities available. The piano and pool table will remain. We will be conducting the work in stages to minimise disruption and allow Flinders Pantry + Cafe to remain operating, with the exception of the standard closure from Monday 18 December 2017 to Tuesday 2 January 2018. Each 'stage' will be closed for renovations during the following timeframes: Stage 1a: 1 Dec 2017 – 2 Jan 2018 (re-opening this day) Stage 1b: 18 Dec 2017 – 22 Jan 2018 (re-opening this day) Stage 1c: 18 Dec 2017 – 2 Jan 2018 (re-opening this day) Stages of work Furniture Plan Flinders Pantry + Café will have seating available inside and outside while the work is occurring. Please click here to find out more. Sturt North balcony capping works Balcony works have started on the northern façade of Sturt North. Work will continue until Monday 18 December 2017. During this time there will be no access through the door on level 1 of the northern side of the building. Noisy works will be scheduled out of hours whenever possible. Access to this area and the car parking spaces under the balcony will be restricted for safety reasons. It’s likely you will see workers outside the windows on all levels. If working on the balconies above ground level, the workers will be harnessed. Welcome SHAPE The College of Nursing and Health Sciences welcomes the Sport, Health and Physical Education Research Centre (SHAPE) into the College. We are excited about the future directions and opportunities to collaborate with the Centre. Thousands of people suffer cardiac arrest in hospital each year and approximately 90% of them die, frequently separated from family members and loved ones. Flinders University College of Nursing and Health Sciences Senior Lecturer and research project leader Dr Tracey Giles is investigating new interventions and approaches to family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) in Australian emergency department (ED) settings. Working Party: Leslee Marando, Steve Parker, Kate Sieber, Sandy Taheny Welcome Dr Rebecca Hoile The Torrens Resilience Institute and Professor Paul Arbon, welcome Dr Rebecca Hoile who is working as an expert consultant for World Health Organisation, World Health Emergency Program on the Health Security Interface Project. Dr Hoile comes to us from INTERPOL in Lyon, France were she previously headed the Bioterrorism Prevention program within the Chemical, Biological and Radiological Sub-Directorate (CRBN). The short term project she is working on will focus on the technical and scientific level responses related to a suspected or known biological incident, including those aspects relevant to alleged use investigations. Her role is to bridge the gap between health agencies and law enforcement (and other security agencies) in order to provide a common language approach to a sometimes technical topic and assist agencies to consider the impact of ‘deliberate’ events on the way we do business, including communication pathways, investigative challenges and response plans. As part of this project she will be establishing an informal technical working group to undertake a gap analysis for WHO and a steering committee for review of CBRN guidance, consisting of local, regional and international partners and sectors with the following outcomes desired:
Rebecca is recognised as an expert in the field of CBRN response, advising law enforcement, military and public health practitioners. She was previously Operations Manager, Senior Forensic Scientist and Forensic Counter Terrorism Manager for NSW Police. Cardiac-toxic Shock for Cancer Patients The research conducted by Professor Clark and her team is vital to help clinicians identify cancer patients at greater risk of developing cardiac complications and through early intervention. The study hopes to improve patient outcomes. The impact of this research will be far reaching and would not be possible without the generous donations received by the Heart Foundation. The inaugural Heart Foundation and SAHMRI cardiovascular research showcase was held on 27 October. The research was published on 17 October in the Cardio-Oncology journal. Nutrition and Dietetics Funding Nutrition and Dietetics had two projects featured in an SA health document launched last week: 'Promoting Health and Wellbeing'. The case study booklet has been produced as part of the SA Council of Social Services and the SA Health Department for Health and Ageing (DHA) Public Health Partnership. The booklet provides an ‘exchange platform’ for those working in the sector to increase opportunities to share experiences and successes, build capacity and momentum to support the health and wellbeing of communities and those most in need. Audiology Scholarship A new scholarship worth $15,000 is now being offered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to undertake the Flinders Master of Audiology. The newly announced Australian Hearing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Master of Audiology Scholarship forges an important pathway to the audiology profession for individuals of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background who wish to pursue a rewarding career in hearing health. Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Professor Eimear Muir-Cochrane has been appointed President of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN), the peak body of mental health nurses in Australia. Eimear has been elected President for a three-year term from late October 2017. Well done Eimear! A ground breaking research project conducted by ACMHN and funded by the National Mental Health Commission reveals that, despite best practice, techniques being available to reduce or eliminate seclusion and restraint national system-wide implementation is inconsistent. Professor Muir-Cochrane found that clinical factors stand in the way of achieving a restraint-free environment. Read more about the research here. Flinders to Become a Leader in Palliative Care researchAustralia is set to become a leader in palliative care research, thanks to a $60 million grant for end-of-life care projects. SA in particular will benefit because Flinders University received $8 million for its palliative care- related research. College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean Professor Jennifer Tieman said the grants were especially necessary given Australia’s large ageing population and the growing demand for palliative care services. Research Summer Scholarships – Call for Project Proposals These scholarships will provide opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in a research project under the supervision of a member of staff, The scholarships are notable for students interested in undertaking honours or higher degree research. The aim of the scholarship is to provide research-related learning opportunities for students. The College of Nursing and Health Sciences Strategic Research Committee will be sponsoring 4-6 awards of up to $1500 this year, depending on the time of activity (e.g. four or six weeks).
