SOA STUDENT AND FIVE FACULTY WIN CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE MEDALS
The Florida Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) presented six of 14 Addison Mizner Medals to one SOA student and five faculty members at the Palm Beach Colony Hotel on the 19th.  Our awards include the following winners and name of award: Edward J. Laird, University of Miami School of Architecture, EMERGING CLASSICIST; Jorge Trelles, RESIDENTIAL under 5,000 sq ft; Frank Martinez, RESIDENTIAL CLASSICAL over 5,000 sq ft; Teofilo Victoria, MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL; Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, URBANISM; and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, PATRON MEDAL.  The model shown here by student Edward Laird is a Studio Project of the Mohegan Island Artist Colony Live Work Studios.

SAVE THE DATE FOR AIA SANDBLAST COMPETITION
The annual AIA Miami Sandblast competition at Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park will test the sand building skills of architecture students from Miami schools. SOA’s AIAS chapter is looking for participants to join in the fun and BBQ scheduled for Sunday, November 10. Marisa Hartfield (marisahartfield@gmail.com), AIAS president, is signing up participants by this Friday.

STUDENTS WELCOME AT HOUSING CONFERENCE THIS WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY
Architects and engineers from all parts of the world will gather in the Perez Center this week for the ZEMCH 2013 International Conference, an interactive discussion on design, production and marketing issues surrounding the delivery of low to zero energy/CO2 emission mass-customized homes built in developed and developing countries. A special 'ZEMCH @ SOA' to follow. 

“DESIGN FOR HABITAT” PARTICIPANTS STUDY FOR COMPETITION
Students involved in the “Design for Habitat Homes for Greater Miami” competition completed their second seminar this week. Registration closed on the 25th. This competition and collaboration between Habitat Young Professionals of Greater Miami and the students of SOA and FIU is to create awareness about our community’s needs, while providing possible solutions for Habitat. 

MIAMI RESILIENCY DESIGN COMPETITION NEARS SUBMISSION DEADLINE
Adapting Miami Residences for Climate Change is the goal of this SOA competition of the School’s USGBC Students.  Submissions, due on November 11, will consist of renderings of one of two provided home sites representing Miami’s future as if adapted into a resilient community, along with a strategy of implementation.  Teams are limited to four people.  Direct all inquiries to umiamiusgbc@gmail.com.   Winners announced on November 12 with an exhibition of entries at the new AIA headquarters on November 13.

STUDENTS INVITED TO SOA ANNUAL HOMECOMING REUNION NOVEMBER 8
SOA students are welcome to join in the SOA Homecoming Reunion Celebration at $15.00 per person from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday evening, November 8, in the School’s courtyard. A limited number of student helpers to register guests and help with logistics are welcome to attend FREE.  AIAS members who will be running the “Homecoming Store” can also register for FREE.  For reservations, please call Carolyn White at 305-284-5002 or email cwhite@miami.edu.  Adults are $25 per person and corporate tables of 10 are $225.
