redditors take action in Nepal and Baltimore, the perfect brownie recipe, a teacher connects with a student through gaming, and hedgehogs! |
It’s been a busy week, so let’s get right to it.
Five years ago, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the reddit community raised over $180,000—this week you donated that much (and more) to Nepal . . . in 24 hours.
Tens of thousands of redditors also followed the Baltimore reddit live thread during the Freddie Gray protests, and discussion happened all throughout the rest of reddit as well, including a comment by mach-2 that became the most gilded comment we’ve seen about this unrest and racism in general.
On a lighter note, we drooled over the greatest brownie recipe ever (I’ll be testing it this weekend, for science!), enjoyed some adorable hedgehog photos, and got inspired by the story of an “Easy A” class that changed a life.
Yep, all this and lots more in this week’s upvoted weekly!
There was a lot of great feedback on last week’s issue, so please keep the discussion going over on /r/upvoted.
OP you are an amazing teacher, if your student ever wants to play, I wouldn't mind, and I'm sure most people here wouldn't either. |
Hey, I'm the community manager for SteelSeries. We make gaming gear for professional gamers and we sponsor two of the best CS-teams in the world. I'd be more than happy to try and facilitate either some gear, autographs or something along those lines if you think it could help him. |
That’s so awesome that you care about your students enough to do this kind of thing! I can tell you, teachers caring about me like that would have helped me so much with motivation. |
Protests erupted in Baltimore last week after Freddie Gray, a black man arrested by the Baltimore police, died in custody. While initially peaceful, they turned violent at times, and the situation has continued to evolve rapidly after his death was ruled a homicide on Friday.
Conflicting media reports have made it difficult to sort out what’s really happening, but a group of redditors has worked hard to concentrate reports from across social media and news sources into a single live feed so you can get constant updates from all different sides of the story in one place.
Great discussions have also been happening across other subreddits as well, with mach-2 writing the most gilded comment we’ve seen on the issue and a huge amount of news and discussion in /r/baltimore.
In fact, donations from redditors now comprise over 30% of all donations Direct Relief has received and 50% of all donations to MAP—pretty phenomenal!
I love that reddit doesn’t JUST post about this stuff: the community actually tries to help. This place constantly surprises and amazes me. And sometimes grosses me out. But right now, I’m surprised and amazed. |
As a Nepali, I just wanted to say thank you so much. From the bottom of my heart. It is so nice to see everybody being so supportive and coming together to help us. We really truly appreciate it. |
Most of us struggle to understand all the complex terms and implications when making large financial decisions, but there are several subreddits that can offer great insights and advice. wondercat54 created this great visual explanation of the dramatic difference between interest types over time and laserinlove explained how it impacts student loans in /r/financialindependence. redditors in /r/personalfinance recently solved a real-life lending problem with different interest rates and types.

Ever wondered what the sun would sound like, if sound could travel through space? In short—probably not very pleasant. Find out exactly what real-life sound it most resembles, how it’s created, and how loud it would be from that distance in drzowie’s explanation in /r/askscience. Then be really glad sound doesn’t travel through space.
