Call for Board Nominations

The IECA Advisory, Nominations and Elections Committee (ANEC) is seeking nominations for candidates to serve on the IECA Board of Directors for the 2017-2019 term. The ANEC welcomes all nominations regardless of experience levels; previous experience chairing a committee or task force is a plus.

If you or someone you know is interested in a leadership role within the association please contact Amanda Kenly, ANEC Chair, by June 30, 2016.

Outstanding Member Call for Nominations

We are now also accepting nominations for "Outstanding Member of the Year." The winner and nominees will be announced during the general session at the upcoming 92nd Annual IECA Conference in Austin, Texas. Recipient is not required to attend.

Nominees should be volunteers who have made significant contributions to the association this year but were also model volunteers previously.

Please send your nomination to Heather Buerger by Friday, July 29. When nominating an individual, please include some notable contributions and a list of committees served.

IECA Spring Conference: Success in Arizona

Exceptional education was the focus for this year’s Spring Conference in beautiful Chandler, Arizona. The program kicked off early on Sunday with our CRMCP session, "Fundamentals of Credit Risk Analysis" with Dennis Blum, of Moody's Analytics.

A true highlight was Sunday's keynote presentation by Peter Zeihan. A packed room took in his dynamic presentation titled "The End of the World and Other Opportunities." Peter wowed the audience with a whirlwind of facts and theories addressing everything from the impact of shifting demographics to his thoughts on the future of oils versus gas pricing.

Don’t forget! You have access to all of the session presentations in the IECA Resource Library, including Peter's keynote session. If you enjoyed what you heard, you may wish to pick up his book, The Accidental Superpower: The Next Generation of American Preeminence and the Coming Global Disorder. Great reviews on Amazon!

Lots of networking also took place with our new members and first time attendees enjoying a reception to get to know fellow newcomers and the volunteer leadership. We featured our educational groups (Professional Women in Energy, Developing Energy Professionals, Credit Analytics and Contracts and Legal) as an opportunity to learn more about their areas of focus and interests. Optional activities of golf and a salsa & margarita challenge provided additional networking opportunities.

Sneak Peek of the Fall Conference

By Heather Buerger, EVP of IECA

The 92nd Annual IECA Conference is scheduled for October 9-12 in Austin, Texas, at the JW Marriott, focusing on “Today’s Challenges, Tomorrow’s Opportunities.” As you all are aware, energy credit and the legal perspective is changing daily. Our members are being required to change with it. This year’s conference will offer many different perspectives on the current energy credit and legal climates. The Conference Planning Committee has created sessions that reflect the challenges and changes that credit managers, analysts, contract administrators and legal professionals are facing daily.

Our first presenters, Kraig Grahmman, Associate at Haynes and Boone, LLP, and Jeff Nicolas, Partner at Haynes and Boone, LLP, will kick off the conference with a presentation on borrowing base redetermination. Kraig and Jeff are both excited to present to the IECA membership and are looking forward to hearing what our members are facing as well as their current experiences.

Our Monday keynote speaker, Scott Rasmussen, brings an extensive background in public opinion on politics, business and lifestyle issues. Rasmussen is the founder of Rasmussen Reports and Styrk.com.

Our Tuesday keynote speaker, Carey Mendes, BP Head of Commercial Development, brings an extensive background in energy trading and Canadian banking in the energy sector.

As with past conferences, we will see many IECA members present sessions focusing on credit and legal issues. We have three days of sessions lined up, so the conference will be jam-packed with timely and relevant educational content!

Austin is just a short drive from Houston and Dallas, so we are hoping that attendance will be driven by proximity.

We look forward to seeing you in Austin in October.

Education on Your Schedule

The IECA and all of our education groups are dedicated to providing educational content regularly on current topics and issues faced in the industry. And now you don’t even have to work the webinars or events in to your schedule to benefit! All IECA members have access to our vast resource library, which houses over 500 past presentations, including a playback for each of our past webinars. We’ve recently revamped the resource library to make it more navigable and aesthetically pleasing.

Check out our all new Resource Library and all our housed webinars here!

As a reminder, you can now search the IECA library of reputable vendors using specific criteria to find exactly what you need. Think of it as a Yellow Pages created specifically for the credit and legal side of the energy industry. The directory will be monitored by IECA staff, and only IECA member companies can create listings, so you can be confident the listings have been verified by credible companies. This one-stop-shop will allow you to directly contact and network with IECA vendors, access a network of highly qualified industry-specific suppliers, and search by services needed, regions served and other general information to find exactly what you need. The IECA is excited to launch the Products & Services Directory and encourages members to utilize this new and valuable benefit.

IECA Educational Groups are on a Roll in 2016!

By Tracy Henning, IECA Staff

The IECA Educational Groups have been hard at work this year to provide timely and informative educational opportunities for all our IECA members. Check out what they’ve been up to below!

Credit Analytics Education Group (CAEG)
The group held their first of a series of calls in March, with the timely topic of “Managing Credit with Depressed Energy Prices.” The call centered on credit rating declines and how different companies are dealing with the coinciding credit management.

After a successful call, the group also pulled together a very timely webinar titled “Failing Companies and the Commonalities Among Them.” This intriguing webinar focused on the commonalities among energy companies that have failed since the beginning of 2015, and explained how these defaults did not happen overnight.

The group is currently working with strategic members of the IECA to develop the bi-annual Survey of Leading Credit Practices with Deloitte. They have a call scheduled later this month.

Contracts and Legal Education Group (CLEG)
CLEG has been very busy this year, holding their first webinar on the first of March. The webinar, “Natural Gas 101,” will be the first in a series of presentations by the IECA designed to introduce industry participants to those commodities commonly encountered in your day-to-day in the energy industry.

The group also held their fourth annual CLEG Lunch & Learn in Houston, Texas, titled "Master Agreements 101" to great success and has a second networking & educational event planned that will be held in New York later this month. The event, "Risks and Rewards: The Challenges of Doing Business in the Current Energy Sector," will start with lunch, then host two sessions each featuring a panel of relevant speakers, finishing with cocktails and networking reception.

Developing Energy Professionals Group (DEPG)
The DEPG group kicked off 2016 with a bang by revamping the New Member & First Time Attendee Reception at the Spring Conference by including the game Networking BINGO as part of the reception, which was a huge success with attendees.

Coming up, the group has not one, but two webinars planned for later this summer. The first webinar will take place on July 14. Speaker Marc Wagman, Area Executive Vice President at Arthur J. Gallagher, Inc will give a presentation titled “Mark-to-Market Credit Exposures: Now A Credit Insurable Risk."

Professional Women in Energy Group (PWEG)
PWEG is hard at work organizing their first webinar. On June 14, Rachel Reisenauer, Vice President of RMG Financial Consulting covered the benefits and uses of scoring, including the various methods needed in developing scoring.

The group has plans to hold at least one, if not a few, in-person educational and networking events later this year. Please check the IECA events calendar for updates and additional information.
