No images? Click here With only two weeks to go until you join us, we thought this would be a good time to explain what your college has to offer. All colleges offer the opportunity to play sport, stand for election, volunteer in the college and wider community, organise events or just relax and socialise. All of this is facilitated by your college team and elected student committee in collaboration with YUSU, our Students' Union. College SportCollege sport is a great way to meet people, make friends, try a new sport or keep going with a sport you already enjoy. You don’t have to play competitively but if you want to, you could get involved in inter-college tournaments and the yearly varsity fixture against the University of Durham. “Joining a college sports team was one of the best things I did in my first year, I met loads of people and made some good mates out of it. The social side is amazing, and you get to have a good laugh and stay fit.” Aleksis College Sport membership costs £18 per year providing you access to every sport’s team within your college. College Events and ActivitiesAll colleges host regular events and activities for students to get involved, try new things and meet new people. Whether it’s submitting an entry to the College Bake Off, competing in a gaming event, hosting Dungeons and Dragons or just watching a movie - there’s something for everyone. One of the events we most look forward to in Goodricke College is our Goodfest, our annual music festival in the summer term organised by our student leaders. Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC)All undergraduate college members elect, and are represented by, a Junior Common Room Committee. They have organised a warm welcome for you, and will continue to organise events and support college activities throughout your time in Goodricke. You’ll find out more about weekly events and opportunities to get involved in the committee/association once you arrive. “Being on the JCRC has been a great way for me to give back to Goodricke. Being able to plan events for and make a difference to students across the college is really rewarding, and I’ve made friends for life as a result!” Stephen (JCRC Chair) STYCsAs soon as you arrive in College, you will be greeted by STYCs (Second and Third Year Contacts). STYCs are coordinated by the student committee and have volunteered to make sure you receive a warm welcome. They provide a good example of what colleges are all about - student led communities. STYMsSecond and Third Year Mentors (STYMs) are trained volunteers who offer all new resident undergraduates peer support throughout their first year. Providing a listening ear, they are friendly and approachable and will help your transition into university and independent living. “Being a STYM I’ve seen how new students have developed over their first year with the help of their STYM. It takes some students a few weeks to settle in, some a matter of minutes, but by the end of the year, everyone feels Goodricke pride and truly belongs to both the college and university communities” Georgia, Goodricke STYM.
