Meet Steven ChanClinical Informatics Fellow SOM SPOT Award Congratulation to our fantastic staff members who received the SOM SPOT Award: Sherry Chen, Jennifer Feld, Christine Lam, Kat Li, Angela Marks, Teri Rose, Joseph Scarpelli, Oralia Schatzman, and Rosemary Yau. These awards are for “in-the-moment contributions” and designed to recognize significant employee achievements and contributions as they occur for a specific project or task over a relatively short period of time. James Harrison was elected to the School of Medicine Faculty Council and is also a new member of the UCSF Committee on LGBT Issues. VitalTalk, a nonprofit organization that specializes in training clinicians to honestly and compassionately discuss serious illness with their patients, has launched a regional hub in the Bay area. UCSF faculty includes Wendy Anderson (hub director), Brook Calton, DorAnne Donesky, Lynnea Mills, Tom Reid, and Eric Widera. The first course is on October 4th, feel free to register below. Brad Monash and Stephanie Rennke were published in the August issue of San Francisco Marin Medicine on medical education at UCSF. Brad wrote about the CODA program and Stephanie described the School of Medicine's Bridges CMC (Clinical Microsystem Clerkship). The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP) are a set of programs established by Congress and designed to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or biobehavioral research careers. Liz Dzeng was awarded the NIH LRP in their recent distribution. Publications Liz Dzeng explores the systemic and cultural factors that contribute to overly aggressive treatments at the end of life such as systemic defaults, physician attitudes and beliefs, and typical practices of care. Rachel Weiss, Margaret Fang, Jenica Cimino, Andrew Auerbach, Wendy Anderson, and colleagues report on a study linking hospitalist empathy to lower patient anxiety and higher ratings of communication. Wendy Anderson, Jenica Cimino, David O'Riordan, Steve Pantilat, and colleagues report on a project to integrate palliative care into ICUs across the UC medical centers.
