Flood Safety Information

The FNHA would like to provide information for First Nations communities to stay safe and be prepared during times of increased flooding. This information is from the FNHA Environmental Health team, as well as public information from Interior Health and the BC Ministry of Health.

IH, FNHA, First Nations Leaders Sign Health-care Declaration

Above: Cariboo area First Nations, Interior Health, FNHA representatives hold personal commitments for cultural safety at the conclusion of the Cultural Safety and Humility Forum at the Xat'sull (Soda Creek) First Nation.

Interior Health, First Nations Health Authority, and First Nations leaders from the Cariboo have signed a Declaration of Commitment to embed a culture of safety and humility, starting with hospital and community services in Williams Lake.

Four representatives from the two health authorities and 13 First Nations and Aboriginal leaders from communities in and around Williams Lake signed the commitment document on the first of a two-day Cultural Safety and Humility Forum, held at the Xat'sull (Soda Creek) First Nation on May 3-4.

Erin Wiltse, FNHA nurse, honoured for bravery!

On Saturday, March 18, 2017, Erin Wiltse, Nurse Practice Consultant for the Professional Practice and Education nursing team was honoured with a silver medal for bravery from the Life Saving Society of BC/Yukon for her heroic lifesaving efforts in the float plane crash in Kitkatla on May 24, 2016.

Erin played an integral part in ensuring that all six passengers were removed from the upside down, submerged float plane.

FNHA and Partners Awarded CIHR Grant for Indigenous Wellness Project

The FNHA in partnership with the Office of Provincial Health Officer and Simon Fraser University, have been awarded a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Catalyst Grant for an exciting new project that will focus on Indigenous approaches to wellness.

The partners will use the $150,000 project grant to find innovative ways to incorporate and integrate Indigenous Knowledge (including oral narratives and storytelling) in the development of health and wellness indicators and in our health reporting processes.

A Day in the Life of an FNHA Nurse: Parts One and Two

It’s a cold, stormy December day. The Port Simpson Nursing Station is busy. The phone rings and a page goes overhead, “Nurse, line one.” I answer the call and hear the trembling voice of a scared, young mother who is only 31 weeks pregnant. “I think I’m in labour,” she says.

Cultural Humility Case Study: Northern Health Indigenous Health Resources

The Northern Health Indigenous Health team developed several resources to support Indigenous people in accessing and navigating the healthcare system. These informative booklets outline the patient complaint process, the mental health and addictions programs and services offered by Northern Health, and the sacred spaces and gathering places available in Northern Health buildings and grounds. In these spaces families and community members can come together for spiritual and cultural healing practices.

FNHA Nurses Win Award for Compassionate Caregivers

FNHA Community Health Nurses Lacey Woloshyn and Jessica Hardwicke are part of a group of health professionals in Northern BC that will receive the Frances Montgomery Compassionate Communities Caregiver Award. ​

The winning team is composed of our FNHA nurses, homecare nurses in Port Simpson, physicians on the palliative care team in Prince George, nurse practitioner Shirley Nixon, as well as the family of the community member that passed away.
