UOW receives Global Teaching Excellence Spotlight Award

UOW has been recognised among the world’s best institutions for teaching excellence, receiving a Spotlight Award in the 2018 Global Teaching Excellence Award. The award recognises and celebrates institution-wide commitment to the pursuit of teaching excellence.

UOW was one of five Spotlight Award recipients, selected from a field of 17 finalists from Asia, Europe, North America, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia, and was the only Australian university shortlisted in two consecutive years.

UOW climbs world university rankings ladder
 

UOW surges 14 places in QS World University Rankings.


UOW has risen in the latest set of QS World University Rankings, climbing 14 places to number 218 in the world and placing 11th in Australia for overall ranking.
 

The 2019 QS World University Rankings showed UOW made improvements in several key performance indicators including academic reputation, research citations by faculty and international students.

UOW SHINES IN ANNUAL RANKING OF WORLD'S TOP YOUNG UNIVERSITIES
 

QS Top 50 Under 50 captures excellence in research, teaching

 

UOW has maintained its outstanding performance in the 2019 QS Top 50 Under 50 rankings, taking out 16th position. In the annual results, UOW rose one spot from last year’s placement of 17th, showing why the University continues to be one of the top emerging universities in the world.

The University’s strong position comes on the back of its success in the QS World University Rankings, announced earlier this month, in which UOW climbed 14 places to number 218 in the world.

UOW achieves highest ever ARWU ranking
 

Publications and citations lead the charge into world’s top 250 universities

 

UOW has achieved its second consecutive jump in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), rising five places to 246 in the 2018 rankings.

 

It is UOW’s highest ever ranking and builds on the success of 2017, when UOW rose 81 places to be ranked 251st in the world. The latest rankings make UOW the 12th highest ranked university in Australia.

Desert Rose House to bloom in Dubai
 

Dementia-friendly, sustainable-energy home complete and ready to compete in global energy competition

 

The Desert Rose House is a student-designed and built house that produces more energy than it uses. The house will compete in the Solar Decathlon Middle East 2018, an international design and construction competition that focuses on sustainability.

 

Not only will the Desert Rose be a net-zero energy home in the harsh climate of the Middle East, Team UOW has set themselves the additional challenge of building a home that improves the quality of life for people living with aged-related disabilities including dementia.

NOEL CRESSIE ELECTED TO AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE
 

World-leading statistical scientist recognised for contribution to research across the sciences

 

Distinguished Professor Noel Cressie has been elected to the prestigious Australian Academy of Science in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science.

A world leader in statistical methodology and its applications to the environmental sciences, Professor Cressie is Director of UOW’s Centre for Environmental Informatics in the National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia and the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics.

Minister launches $7.3 million rail training centre
 

Centre will equip engineers with skills needed to meet Australia’s rail transport challenges

 

Australian Federal Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham officially launched a $7.3 million rail training centre at UOW yesterday (Wednesday May 23).

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Advanced Technologies in Rail Track Infrastructure (ITTC Rail) will train the next generation of rail engineers with the knowledge and skills needed to maintain and upgrade Australia’s rail network.

Scientists share latest in materials, physics and chemistry research at Joint Workshop
 

Annual event fosters collaborative research between Beihang University and UOW

 

Since their first partnership in 2009, UOW and BUAA have developed a strong bilateral relationship and in 2014 established a Joint Research Centre to facilitate further collaboration and provide a dynamic environment for joint research in materials science, physics, engineering, and informatics sciences.

 

The Joint Workshop, now held on an annual basis, provides a forum for researchers from the two universities to exchange research ideas, lay the groundwork for sharing of research resources and to set up collaborative programs in materials research and education.

RESEARCH TEAM BREAKS NEW GROUND IN GUIDING DROPLETS WITH PRECISION IN 3D
 

Research team breaks new ground in guiding droplets with precision and control in 3D

 

They say that oil and water don’t mix, but they’ve proven to be the perfect pair in research into moving droplets in 3D using only light.

ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) Chief Investigator Professor David Officer and his research team at UOW have broken new ground in guiding droplets with precision and control in 3D. For the first time, UOW PhD students Yang Xiao and Sara Zarghami have demonstrated that oil droplets can be moved and guided through water simply using light.

UOW signs Memorandum of Understanding with Tianjin University.

 

A shared interest in materials science has led to a partnership between the University of Wollongong and Tianjin University in China.

Kawasaki delegation marks collaboration between UOW, Japan

Future educational and research opportunities between the University of Wollongong (UOW) and Japan were discussed during a visit by a high-level delegation from Wollongong’s sister city of Kawasaki.

 

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Wollongong City Council/Kawasaki City sister city relationship.

Inaugural UOW-CCNU joint institute graduation ceremony
 

The first graduates of the Wollongong Joint Institute of Central China Normal University (CCNU) were awarded their degrees by Professor Wilma Vialle, President of the Academic Council, University of Wollongong.

 

Vice President Wu Helin gave the welcoming address on behalf of the Joint Research Institute where he outlined the initiative of CCNU and UOW to establish a Joint Institute (JI) in 2015 with the approval of the PR China’s Ministry of Education.

 

The Joint Insitute is facilitated by CCNU and UOW to cultivate an international partnership with innovative teaching and world-class research. Since 2016 the JI has offered Master degrees in Computer Science and Telecommunication Engineering. In particular, Vice President Wu noted how the JI had continued to expand its teaching staff and student numbers, with a particular focus on improving teaching quality and resources.

Beijing Jiaotong University delegation visits UOW

 

UOW’s ties with Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) in China were strengthened further on 3 July with a collaboration seen as helping to meet 'shared national challenges' facing China and Australia.

 

The delegation headed by Professor Baigen Cai, and Professor Yidong Li, Dean and Vice Dean of BJTU’s School of Computer and Information Technology, visited UOW to discuss opportunities to collaborate in research and teaching in computer vision, medical image analysis, machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, and software testing

Xuzhou Medical University delegation visits Wollongong

 

UOW is set to expand its existing research collaboration with Xuzhou Medical University (XZMU) of China to achieve more outcomes in joint research and Higher Degree Research training over the next four years.

UOW College Hong Kong students visit Wollongong
 

As part of a two week academic and cultural exposure program, forty eight students from Community College of City University (CCCU) / UOW College – Hong Kong (UOWC HK) visited the Wollongong campus and explored the Illawarra region.

 

For the first time, students studying with UOWC HK in Beijing joined students currently undertaking an Associate Degree with CCCU/UOWC HK. Graduates from UOW Top-Up degrees at CCCU/UOWC HK also joined the group to explore the possibility of future study opportunities at UOW’s Wollongong campus.

Global Scope initiative provides international students with valuable employment skills

 

A new program that pairs international students with mentors in the corporate world was launched at UOW on Monday, 25 June.

Fifty postgraduate students from UOW, from the fields of engineering and business, are taking part in Global Scope, an initiative of StudyNSW and Sydney-based start-up Intersective, in collaboration with UOW Careers Central.

New Colombo Plan to help students experience culture, opportunities of Indo-Pacific region
 

UOW receives more than $1 million to fund hundreds of projects

 

UOW has received nearly $1.2 million in funding which will enable students to study throughout the Indo-Pacific region. More than 250 grants and scholarships are available to current students as part of the New Colombo Plan.

Undergraduate students can take part in internships, mentorships, research, and short- or long-term study placements, at one of 40 host locations, including Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Vietnam, India and the Pacific Islands.

Gala Night celebrates ties between Vietnam, Australia
 

Evening of entertainment recognises immense contribution of Vietnamese students

 

The University of Wollongong’s Vietnamese Students Association (VGong) honoured the strong relationship between Australia and Vietnam during an evening of entertainment. 

 

Hosted by VGong, the event brought together Vietnamese students from around the state for the Gala Night, which featured cultural performances and a talent competition.

 

More than 100 students and special guests attended the inaugural event, including Dr Duc Hai Trinh, Consul-General of Vietnam in NSW, and members of the United Association of Vietnamese Students in NSW.
