Goggles for playing rugby

Shortly before the turn of the year, ABDO was contacted by the England Rugby Union (RFU) to discuss proposals made by the International Rugby Board (IRB) which would allow players participating in rugby matches to wear goggles. After lengthy discussions involving both the RFU and the IRB we offered opinion on the proposals and the goggles that were approved for wear.

It should be noted that ABDO was extremely uncomfortable with the proposed goggle in that there were several concerns. Primarily this centred on the parameters of the frame which we deemed unsatisfactory for young children.

The RFU have now decided to conduct a national trial (click here for details) having taken on board the comments we have made. Consequently there is now provision for goggles to be worn for u13s. Clearly ABDO would expect all members to use professional judgement when dispensing a product for this purpose.

During discussions, we felt beyond any doubt that a sports goggle incorporating the prescription (non-insert) with a band from the frame front would potentially be the most suitable. Many suppliers will provide various sizes relevant to fitting requirements. Additionally the safety element of lenses was discussed and it was unanimously agreed that a lens inherent of greater impact resistance properties would be most appropriate.

It should be noted that other rugby unions will be participating in the global trial. ABDO strongly suggests that professional judgement should be used if the need to dispense the approved goggles arises.

Vouchers at a glance

Following the announcement this March of the proposed NHS voucher values increase across the UK, the Optical Confederation has now released its annual Vouchers at a glance card for optical professionals.

The card shows a 2 per cent rise in voucher values across the range of NHS optical vouchers available to children, people on low incomes and individuals with complex sight problems.

To view download a PDF version of the card click here; a hard copy of the card will be inserted with the May issue of Dispensing Optics.

Do you hold the ABDO ‘Contact Lens Certificate’?

Have you thought about continuing your studies to achieve the advanced contact lens diploma – and use the suffix FBDO (Hons) CL – but are unsure of just where and how to start?

ABDO College is introducing an Advanced Contact Lens Diploma Preparation Course to guide and support those interested in attaining the higher qualification.

The ABDO College Advanced CL Preparation Course will take place on 28 and 29 May 2014 at ABDO College in Kent. This will be followed by a series of distance learning projects to provide structured revision, in readiness for the winter 2014 examinations.

The sections of the examination are as follows:

A Toric lens fitting
B Presbyopia correction
C Remedial fitting, such as keratoconus, post refractive treatment and orthokeratology
D Current knowledge, to include materials, designs, care products and current practice
E Case records

The units may be attempted in any order within a three-year period but all units must be achieved within five years.

Full costs for the two days of tuition plus distance learning modules are £700 but there is generous sponsorship of £300 per delegate from Contamac and No 7 Contact Lenses for the first six delegates enrolled, so the cost to these delegates will be £400. Course information and application forms are available from Rachel Blazyca at ABDO College on 01227 733 921 or email her  at rblazyca@abdocollege.org.uk.
