Around the world in 80 dishes, the end of the toilet paper dispute, why Wednesday is pronounced wrong, Diablo 3 and a 3-year-old, and more.

Upvoted Weekly

Did you know that reddit crowdsourced jokes—one word at at time!—this week? This one is my favorite.

I loved learning why the USA passed a law to make sure no US Officer would ever outrank George Washington (the OG American) and even posthumously promoted him to “six-star general.”

LeVar Burton, another hero in a completely different way, stopped by and talked about a lot—did you know he studied for the priesthood? And a newly-famous actor made a surprise appearance in the Game of Thrones subreddit to defend his name.

And possibly most importantly, the age-old toilet paper dispute also got settled on reddit this week, by the toilet paper itself.

Yeah, it was quite a week, and our Upvoted podcast broke 1,000,000 downloads! Wow. We’re only 20 episodes in and so grateful for all the support.

Today is also your last day to sign up for the Arbitrary Day gift exchange. You should go do that.

The answer to why everyone pronounces “Wednesday” like “Wensday”

Does that mean Thursday = Thor’s day?

Yeah. Sun Day, Moon Day, Tyr’s Day, Odin’s Day, Thor’s Day, Frig’s Day, and Saturn’s Day.

COOKING
Cook around the world in 80 dishes

iGordon asked /r/cooking for their favorite local recipes, and the community responded heartily.

protox88 shared a traditional Cantonese-style sweet and sour pork from Hong Kong, Shapeshifters taught us how to build and use a hangi (earth oven) so we can cook like the Maori, PinkMoonrise taught us how to make the perfect Canadian poutine, atoobi brought us klubb og duppe (delicious potato balls with brown caramel cheese sauce and bacon) from Norway, and there are tons more exotic recipes to try out from far-flung corners of the world.

ARMY
Redditors in the army recount their most embarrassing military moments

I dropped my patrol cap in the port-o-john during basic training. Naturally, being the scared shitless private that I was (as I now no longer had a cover), I pulled my shit and blue goo covered PC out of there, and walked out without it on to wash it at the water buffalo and maybe it would be okay to wear. Of course, it was just my luck that a LTC was walking by …

TL;dr—Got hurt in OSUT. Almost lost my dick and balls. Bonded with several drill sergeants. 90% of the people on Fort Benning saw my dick and balls. Everything came out ok in the end.

OBSCUREKNOWLEDGE
We’re filling our brains with obscure knowledge

We’re in love with the brand new subreddit /r/obscureknowledge, where we also learned that a millionaire once bought Stonehenge for his wife, who didn’t like it so he ended up gifting it to the nation instead, and that Detroit actually gave Saddam Hussein a key to their city.

A retired NASA engineer who was there from its infancy shares his experiences

What is the most memorable point of your career?

During a Navy launch, the main stage the missile came up and started cartwheeling over our building. The second stage of the missile went up and landed just a couple thousands yards away from us… At T minus 5, we turned off the radar so it wouldn’t interfere with the launch. Right as the rocket went haywire and flipped end over end a message came on the radio “Take cover!” The rocket hit the ground and rocked us.
