Supporting Community-Driven, Nation-Based Wellness Activities
The FNHA is pleased to announce another round of grant opportunities for First Nations communities and health service partners to host a wellness event in your community this summer in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. Last year 99 Aboriginal Day of Wellness events brought together over 20,000 people.
Community-based, partnership-focused, participant-driven applications will be assessed with fairness and equity within and across the regions.
Application deadline by email, fax or Survey link is April 23, 2015.

33 Days until Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey and we have received over 70 workshop applications!
Now in its seventh year of operation, Gathering Wisdom is the largest First Nations health conference in BC and the only one of its kind in Canada, attracting over 850 delegates from across British Columbia, Canada and internationally.

Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise: An Innovative Model of Shared Care- David Thompson, and Dr. Garey Mazowita, MD, CCFP, FCFP
Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE) is an innovative model of shared care where family physicians can call one number, choose from a selection of specialty services and be connected to the specialists usually within a few minutes. With demonstrated successful outcomes, this model has spread provincially and has gained national and international interest.
My Sacred Journey: Aboriginal Pregnancy Passport - Lucy Barney, RN, MSN, and Adam King, SSP, MPH
Perinatal Services BC developed “My Sacred Journey: Aboriginal Pregnancy Passport”, a culturally appropriate health promotion resource empowering women and families journeying on their sacred pregnancy journey which incorporates First Nation/Aboriginal traditional beliefs and values as well as clinical best practices.
Men of the North - Jolene Prince and Alexander Erickson
A workshop designed to encouraging men to form a foundation of brotherhood in a safe and nonjudgmental environment and create a self-sufficient group that will inspire the growth and wellbeing of all men.

FNHA, SFU and St. Paul's Hospital Announce Heart Health and Wellness Chair for First Nations Peoples

Coast Salish Territory - Vancouver, BC -The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Simon Fraser University (SFU), and St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation have announced the establishment of the First Nations Health Authority Chair in Heart Health and Wellness at St. Paul’s Hospital. The position, the first of its kind in Western Canada, will offer a holistic focus on First Nations and Aboriginal peoples’ cardiac health, and put First Nations communities in the driver’s seat of heart health research to determine their own path to better health outcomes.
The $1.9-million Chair will lead research and education into critical policy related to heart health, disease prevention and control associated with chronic diseases among First Nations people, providing invaluable direction and a guiding voice in the area of cardiac health and its wellness determinants. The role will be an active leadership voice locally, provincially, and nationally, advancing the understanding of strategies to develop a program of excellence in First Nations wellness and disease prevention.

Putting Health Back Into Health Benefits - Concluding Engagement with Citizens
As the FNHA prepares to complete transition in the area of Health Benefits we look to take control of the policy and administration for Pharmacy, Dental and Medical Supplies and Equipment benefit areas. The First Nations Health Benefits (FNHB) team has investigated health benefit plan designs, and examined the existing plan to identify new approaches and demonstrate how these options might work for the FNHA. These options have previously been shared with Chiefs and Health Directors at five regional caucus sessions in October and November, 2014. UBC Learning Circle: Meet the FNHA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Evan Adams!
April 15, 2015 - 1-3 p.m.

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) announced the selection of Dr. Evan Adams as Chief Medical Officer this past December. As CMO, Dr. Adams, Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation will lead a team of FNHA physicians, health and wellness professionals. Evan will provide clinical direction and leadership on behalf of the FNHA to key stakeholders including: professional regulatory bodies, health authorities, federal, provincial & international government departments, educational bodies, physician organizations and others. This session will provide an opportunity for community to hear from our CMO and how he plans to support community in this new and exciting role.

Carrier Sekani Family Services Stay Warm Through Active Sports as Part of the Winter Wellness Challenge

Carrier Sekani Family Services challenged themselves to bring Carrier communities together for active sports and to build bonds and friendships amongst the Carrier people.
The event involved over 100 athletes from around the area. These participants ranged from preschoolers to Elders and the activities were snow-shoeing, floor hockey and ice hockey.

There are so many wellness success stories taking place in our communities. Nations are strengthening their cultural traditions, languages, and defining what health and wellness means to them. So what does wellness look, sound, and feel like in your community? This work can be heavy at times and we need you to help us reframe the conversation. We will be using these wellness indicators to measure our progress in the future.

Did you know that there is a 24 hour Crisis Line for Aboriginal people?
KUU-US Crisis Line has been in operation since 1993 . As an accredited agency of the American Association of Suicidology, crisis intervention trained phone operators assist those in crisis 24hrs a day. KUU-US has expanded crisis services to all Aboriginal people on Vancouver Island and the province of British Columbia.
