KABELI A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONYFirst hydropower project in Nepal under constructionInfraCo Asia Development Pte. Ltd., part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group, and its Nepalese project partner, Butwal Power Company (BPC) held a groundbreaking ceremony in remote eastern Nepal on Thursday 23 March to mark the start of construction of the 37.6MW run-of-river Kabeli A Hydropower Project. This is InfraCo Asia’s first hydro development in the country, and it will create 60 long term jobs, while benefiting around 1.6 million people through a more reliable, affordable power supply. Representatives of the government of Nepal attended, as well as representatives of the government of the United Kingdom, which provides funding support through InfraCo Asia, with the governments of Australia and Switzerland. Mr Strahan Spencer, Senior Economic Advisor with the UK's Department for International Development in Nepal and Mr Franck Bessette (Acting) Country Head for the World Bank in Nepal both spoke. LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS VITALInfraCo Asia representatives also attended BPC's Golden Jubilee celebrations in Kathmandu on Saturday 25 March. At this event BPC Chair, Mr Padma Jyoti, acknowledged the importance of the development expertise and capital provided by InfraCo Asia for the Kabeli A project.
