New app aims to bridge gap between NDIS and Indigenous people with disability A new web-based app targeting Aboriginal Australians has been developed to help connect people with disability in remote Indigenous communities, and their carers, with the NDIS. Building a foundation for working in remote and Indigenous communities The first Framing Indigenous Health course since the COVID-19 disruption began in March, was held in Alice Springs in August, and was very successful with students from Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia attending. Assisting local clinics with education during COVID-19 During COVID-19 where travel restrictions may have limited the learning opportunities for some remote practitioners, Flinders NT educators at Nhulunbuy have been assisting local health services by providing practical education sessions. Promoting careers in health to high school students Dr Danny Tsai, Rural Pharmacy Liaison Officer and Adjunct Lecturer at the Centre for Remote Health, visited two groups of senior science students at St Philips College in Alice Springs, to raise awareness of Antiobiotic Resistance and to promote healthcare professions, particularly pharmacy. Flinders NT medical students collect third prize in national hackathon Two teams comprising six students from Flinders NT Medical Program and one from CDU environmental engineering, recently represented the NT in a nation-wide virtual 2 day ‘Hackathon’, run by the Australian Medical Student’s Association. A little remote, a lot remarkable Flinders Northern Territory Medical Program student Claire Maree O’Bryan wasn’t really sure what to expect when, as a first year student, she signed up for a six-month placement in Nhulunbuy to be undertaken in her third year. The privilege of being a Remote Area Nurse Angelique Richards was always interested in Indigenous health and a placement during her postgraduate studies allowed her to live that dream. During her Remote Health Practice (RHP) postgraduate studies with the Centre for Remote Health, Angelique completed a placement at Lake Nash in the Northern Territory’s Barkly Region. She then secured a permanent position as a Remote Area Nurse (RAN) at Lake Nash and has remained living and working in the NT ever since. Speech Pathology practices adapt to COVID-19 COVID-19 has posed many challenges for clinical educators as well as students, but when Flinders University Master of Speech pathology student, Rochelle Hunt flew home to Darwin to stay with family, it opened up a great opportunity for her to commence her final placement at Royal Darwin Hospital. Back-to-back nursing placements in the Barkly region Renee Mellier from Charles Darwin University, recently completed ten weeks of back-to-back nursing placements in the Northern Territory’s Barkly region, supported by the Flinders NT placement team. Farewell to Professor Phillip Carson Professor Phillip Carson retired from Royal Darwin Hospital in June 2020. Professor Carson joined Flinders in 2002 as an Associate Professor in Surgery. He was an effective and committed surgical educator and took particular care to involve students in all aspects of patient care. He has been involved with the Northern Territory Medical Program from its inception in 2011 and has spent many hours teaching and mentoring our students. Farewell to Ross Carter Flinders NT bids farewell to Ross Carter, Deputy Manager Flinders NT, who completed his duties with Flinders NT in August 2020. Administrator’s Medals in Primary Health Care Nominations for the 2020 Administrator’s Medals in Primary Health Care are now open.
