In this edition we will look back on what’s happened over the last three months and bringing you our usual segments from the Shooting Australia Team. We've had a busy time with the Tokyo One Year To go celebrations, Sydney 2000 Games 20 year anniversary, Wellbeing Week, SATV, and upcoming events including the annual Awards of Excellence. As borders are reopening and competitions resume in most states, we keep our Victorian friends high in our thoughts and the struggles they continue to face. Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic One Year to Go![]() On the 23rd of July we celebrated the One Year To Go mark for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and on the 24th of August was the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games One Year To Go. We celebrated these times by reflecting on our past Olympic and Paralympic medallists, including Shooting’s first ever Olympic medal won by Pattie Dench, and one of Paralympics most decorated athletes, Libby Kosmala. In less than 12 months, our athletes will be competing in one of the largest international sporting competitions of their career. Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic GamesAs we look forward to supporting our athletes in less than 12 months time, we also reflect on what our country had just witnessed 20 years ago, and were about to experience in a few weeks. 20 years ago we would be between the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games where Shooting sports had great success. On Tuesday the 29th of September, we showcased some of the highlight moments of the Sydney Games and spoke to athletes, officials and participants as we took a stroll down memory lane. ![]() Check out the Tuesday Night Live 20 year Anniversary Celebration here Competitions UpdateInternationalShooting Australia is excited to announce the 2024 Junior World Championships for Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun disciplines will be held at the Sydney International Shooting Centre (SISC) at Cecil Park. PistolCompete Together Compete Together is a Shooting Australia facilitated three event competition series to be held during September and November, 2020. ![]() ![]() As a postal competition, this series of events will enable the High Performance Program Athletes to remain connected and competitive from the comfort and convenience of their local Pistol Range in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games, the domestic competition circuit and international events. Compete Together has a strong emphasis on inclusivity, encouraging participation from able bodied and Para athletes as well as men, women and junior competitors. RiflePostal Competition The Rifle Athletes have been participating in a number of postal competitions enabling them to compete at their local range and preventing any need to travel. Their results are electronically submitted within a qualifying time-frame and a central leaderboard is maintained. A big thank you to Petr Kurka and Carrie Quigley for their creativeness and commitment to this postal competition program. If you are interested in being a part of this Rifle postal competition, email Shooting Australia’s National Rifle High Performance Coach Petr Kurka (petr@shootingaustralia.org) to register. ![]() ![]() Grand Prix On the 25th – 27th of September Target Rifle South Australia hosted the first of three Rifle competitions included in the Rifle Grand Prix which will conclude at the end of November. This competition was a mixed event with men, women, able and para sport athletes competing together. Congratulations to Jack Rossiter, Alex Hoberg and Dane Sampson on their gold medals over the weekend. Awards of ExcellenceOn Tuesday 17 November, Shooting Australia will host the Shooting Australia Awards of Excellence, live streamed on SATV. You will be able to join us from the comfort of your homes to celebrate the wonderful achievements from within the competition target shooting sport community. Due to the inability to travel and compete internationally, the focus for this Awards night will not be on High Performance, although we will acknowledge the past successes, but be on community involvement and engagement throughout the year. ![]() Community Award Submissions are open in four different categories:
In The MediaSeptember was a busy year for our sport in the media. The Sydney 2000 20th anniversary saw interviews with the likes of Clive Barton, Suzy Balogh and Michael Diamond. Our In Sight series continued with Olympic medallists, and articles and interviews released around the country for both our Paralympic and Olympic athletes. Simple exercises, such as with a stress ball shown in the video, when performed consistently for a period of time give the athlete significant improvements. ![]() The High Performance Squad athletes, during this lockdown period have completed many small training sessions with the aim to develop physically and skilfully. This exercise can be done anywhere, anytime. Wellbeing WeekOn the 7th September the AOC Wellbeing Week began and over the following five days they shared a series of interviews with the theme of Empower. Topics covered include passion, future and of course, mental health. You can find the series of videos here On the 8th of September, Shooting Australia also hosted a Tuesday Night Live talking with Australian Institute of Sport Psychologist,... SASI person... and Paralympic athlete Chris Pitt. Our Athletes Say Thank youThe last six months have been unprecedented, long and extremely difficult for a lot of people. Our athletes are not immune to the struggles of adapting to what seems to be becoming a new way of life but have had incredible support from our Institutes of Sport. Some of our athletes have thanked these Institutes for their ongoing support while they learn to train under different circumstances. ![]() Season RecommendationRising Phoenix is a documentary film that showcases the story of the Paralympic Games, from its origins following World War II to becoming the world’s third largest sporting event. Elena's message was inspiring about how as a team we can all still help to make a difference even during these tough times, and perfectly encapsulates the spirit of our sport! Shooting Australia TVTuesday Night LiveWe love producing, sharing and communicating content that is exciting and engaging for you, our community. ![]() We love coming together as often as we can to celebrate the highs and lows together. We also love bringing new and fresh ideas to build this community and promote the sport we love so much. In order to do this, we will be extending the Tuesday Night Live show to monthly shows which opens the doors to other much needed communications and platforms yet to be discovered. Stay tuned on what's to come. Shooting The BreezeEvery month we release a new episode of Shooting the Breeze. Hosted by Jamie Stangroom, this series of interviews gets up close and personal with internationally successful athletes from all around the world. Athletes included Zorana Arunovic, Kayle Browning and most recently, Issy Bailey. Next week we release episode #7 with world number one Rapid Fire Pistol athlete, Christian Reitz. Let's see if he can beat our Sergei Evglevski in Tok-yo or Toky-no. ![]() Since launching SATV last year, Shooting Australia has partnered with content specialist Damn Good Productions to collaborate on the creation of various online video and social media content, including our very popular Tuesday Night Live series and live streaming of our competitions. The Damn Good team have over 30 years producing large scale events; providing technical production for concerts, conferences, and special events; and creating video content for a range of television, entertainment, corporate and streaming markets. So why let your next event, video or live-stream be average, when you can make it a Damn Good one? New Roles at Shooting AustraliaDevelopment CoordinatorShooting Australia have recently appointed Barry Sims to the role of Development Coordinator (DC). The DC will work with State Associations and Clubs in South Australia to support the development and growth of the sport in the state. The DC Project is a pilot project being led by Shooting Australia in collaboration with National Member Organisations and State Associations in South Australia and is supported by funding from the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing in South Australia. ![]() Open: General Manager, Commercial and MarketingShooting Australia will appoint a General Manager, Commercial and Marketing as it seeks to expand its revenue streams and broaden brand and marketing activity ahead of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games next year. |
