Our fifth annual conference will be a chance to meet again in person following last year's successful virtual event. We're really looking forward to bringing the lifestyle medicine community together at Edinburgh International Conference Centre from September 2-4 for three full days of expert speakers and fun and enjoyable activities. We also hope as many of you as possible can join us for our Friday evening gala dinner at the National Museum Scotland which will feature our guest speaker, British long-distance cyclist Mark Beaumont who holds the world record for cycling round the world! The Scottish Government recently confirmed the removal of most Covid-19 restrictions which gives us additional confidence that our conference can now go ahead. The session is free to BSLM members and this month we will be joined by Hertfordshire-based GP Dr Richard Pile and public health physician Dr Behrooz Behbod. Richard, a cardiovascular and lifestyle medicine specialist, will be talking about the "missing pillar of wellbeing" - purpose. Having purpose in life can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes and protect us from cognitive decline. Behrooz is Director of Public Health at the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and will be discussing lifestyle medicine career opportunities at the webinar. Behrooz is a Harvard and Oxford trained Public Health Physician, with experience at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the NHS, Public Health England and Public Health Wales. Lifestyle medicine diploma update Would you like to take your lifestyle medicine skills and knowledge to the next level by obtaining a diploma through the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine? Hundreds of BSLM members have now obtained lifestyle medicine board certification with the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine (IBLM) and BSLM. If you want to sign up for this year's course, you have until the end of September to do so. However, before then, you will need to sign up to attend our annual conference in Edinburgh (September 2-4) to ensure you are able to obtain the necessary 'in-person' CPD hours required by the course. This year's exams will be held between November 27 & December 11 at a number of local test centres. Dates and venues TBC. Certification can be undertaken from a clinical or public health perspective, and demonstrates your commitment to, and expertise in, Lifestyle Medicine. It will also augment your clinical or public health practice with a solid grounding in preventing, managing and reversing chronic and lifestyle-related disease. We’re currently looking for additional members for the Physical Activity SIG – please get in touch with the office if you're interested BSLM Latest NewsBook now for Maurice Bloch Annual Lecture Series Lifestyle medicine, virtual group consultations and group care in the NHS are on the agenda at a forthcoming lecture organised by The Institute of Health and Wellbeing. BSLM Director of Science and Research Dr Fraser Birrell will be appearing alongside Yale University’s Prof Jeannette Ickovics for the first event in the 2021-22 Maurice Bloch Annual Lecture Series. The online lecture takes place on Wednesday, August 25 at 10am with Prof Ickovics talk on Innovations in Clinical Care: Group Prenatal Care to Improve Maternal and Child Outcomes. Dr Birrell will provide a brief update on progress embedding group care models across the NHS, the NIHR adopted national evaluation project, plus the rapid growth of virtual group consultations and Lifestyle Medicine itself during the pandemic. Find out more and sign up via eventbrite ASLM hosts international Diabetes Revolution summit Our colleagues at the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine organised a very successful international summit on type 2 diabetes in July The Diabetes Revolution summit focused on achieving remission from type 2 diabetes using lifestyle medicine approaches. The UK was well represented including BSLM conference speakers Dr David Unwin and Prof Roy Taylor - and BSLM’s very own Dr Ellen Fallows who chaired one of the sessions on the day. You can still register for post-summit access via the ASLM website Deepak lifts the lid on long covid and lifestyle medicine What is long covid? What are its causes? And what are the main symptoms? In an interview for BSLM's new Frontline Insights series, Dr Deepak Davindran explains everything you need to know about the condition. Deepak is a Consultant in Pain and MSK medicine and the author of The Pain Free Mindset. He is also a member of BSLM's Pain Special Interest Group. In the interview Deepak discusses his work as Clinical Lead at the Berkshire Long Covid Integrated Service (BLIS), one of 89 long covid clinics in the UK. He also shares his insights on what lifestyle-based interventions may help those with the condition. Deepak has also written a blog for the BSLM website on long covid. John Muir Trust resources explore nature and health The John Muir Trust has published a series of informative articles on the health benefits of wild places and nature. The Wild and Well series includes articles on connecting with nature, nature and mental health and climate change. The resources also examine the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on our access to nature. Read more on the John Muir website BSLM executive director joins Afternoon Tea With Docs BSLM executive director Dr Fraser Quin joined Dr Erica and Dr Linda of Afternoon Tea With Docs in July. Fraser enjoyed a cuppa and a chat - with lifestyle medicine and the future of BSLM on the agenda. BSLM members Dr Erica and Dr Linda set up Afternoon Tea with Docs to empower patients and clinicians to regain control of their health. Join our colleagues in Cornwall for the 4th Kernow British Society of Lifestyle Medicine Conference this September. This one day regional conference takes place at the Pavilion Centre in Wadebridge on September 27th. The event is aimed at GPs, clinicians, allied health and social care professionals interested in the use of evidence-based lifestyle measures to prevent, treat and manage chronic conditions. The CPD-accredited event is open to anyone with full or associate BSLM membership. A packed programme of inspirational speakers is promised alongside a chance to dance the Cornish Shuffle! The lineup includes Dr Lucy Loveday, Professor Sir Muir Gray, Director of the Food & Mood Centre Professor Felice Jacka, and sleep disorder specialist Heather Elphick. EASO publishes new obesity guidelines for HCPsThe European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) has published new guidelines for healthcare professionals to support people living with obesity. The guidelines are useful for those interested in using lifestyle approaches to help patients. The guidelines have been published by the Association's Physical Activity Working Group and set five clear goals to help healthcare professionals deliver practical information to help their patients with obesity.
