A college is a community within the wider university community. It is a place to socialise, learn new skills, explore your interests and access support and guidance. There are nine colleges across campus, each with their own distinct history and character. They all provide the same services and opportunities, and have a dedicated team of staff and student volunteers who are here for you throughout your time at York. If you live on campus, your college is determined by where you live. If you are an undergraduate (UG) living off campus, you will be assigned a college close to your academic department. If you are a postgraduate (PG) living off campus, you will be a member of Wentworth Graduate College. Which college is the best? The one you're in! Colleges work closely with YUSU (University of York Students' Union) and GSA (Graduate Student's Association) throughout the year to ensure that all our students feel represented, supported, valued and have fun. The health and wellbeing of our students and staff is our number one priority. Over the summer, we’ve been working hard to create a Covid-secure campus. If you’re living in a flat with shared facilities, you and your flatmates will be treated as a single household so you’ll be able to spend time together without the need to socially distance. This also applies to off-campus housing. Colleges are more than just a place to live. They provide you with opportunities to meet new friends, try something new and encourage you to get involved. Whether it’s attending an event, joining a college sports team, volunteering or joining the student committee - there’s something for everyone, whether you live on or off campus.Your membership doesn’t end when you graduate either, you are a member for life! What should I be doing now?Start getting excited and, if you haven't already, sign up for either the PG or UG short private online course (SPOC) - York's Learning Community. The courses started on Monday 24 August but it is not too late to participate using your uni email address. The course will give you a head start and help you understand what teaching, learning and assessment mean at York. There will be more induction and welcome materials available soon. Your college will be in touch on Friday 4 September via your university email address.
