Over the course of four weeks, the Nak’azdli Health Centre used its Winter Wellness Grant to roll out its ‘2016 Winter Survivor Challenge’. Utilizing the great outdoors, setting quality time aside for friends and family, adding an edge of competition and a splash of creativity, the event proved to be a recipe for a ton of fun for over 60 participants. Stepping outside their comfort zone, Health Centre staff hosted a number of outdoor challenges, which they promoted on their Facebook page each Monday.

Whether it was setting night lines for ling cod or snowshoeing for the first time in many seasons, the challenges brought the community together enabling participants to learn more about their teammates, town and themselves. Many thanks are sent out to Cebo and Renada for creating such a great event, the community can’t wait for next year.

A group of Prince George Women Warriors are braving the sub-zero temperatures to keep active and train for the coming April Sun Run in Vancouver. 

"Training is not about being better than someone else. It's about pushing harder for yourself! No waiting, we make it happen. In the cold, rain, or sunshine - if anything - we keep shining," said Barby Skaling from the Carrier Sekani Family Services Sun Run trainee team. 

Team members include Renee Gomes, Jaylene Bourdon, Barby Skaling, Corvina Louie, Sheila Alexander, Marie Merasty, Diane Fulton and Marcella Page.

On Feb. 24, a record number of FNHA family members wore pink to support Pink Shirt Day 2016 and put a stop to bullying! In addition to the visibility the initiative brings to this issue, the event is an important fundraising campaign: Pink Shirt Day has raised $1.2 million dollars for anti-bullying programs since 2008!

A memorandum of understanding signed between the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the First Nations Health Authority will support collaborative efforts to advance health research in partnership with British Columbia’s First Nations.​

The agreement lays the foundation for futu​re cooperation between MSFHR and FNHA to identify emerging research opportunities that include and support Indigenous methodologies and perspectives, as well as their integration in health and wellness programming and services.

FNHA Data Governance forums began on Feb 25-26 in the Fraser Salish region with some standout presentations from FNHA's Chair in Heart Health and Wellness at St. Paul's Hospital Dr. Jeff Reading and the First Nations Health Council's Gwen Phillips, among others.

The Elizabeth Henry Scholarship for Communities and Environmental Health supports graduate students working on research projects in partnership with British Columbian communities that are addressing environmental health issues and promoting environmental sustainability through cooperative community initiatives.

The goal of these projects should be to support Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in their efforts to improve air quality, environmental health or environmental sustainability in BC.

Findings from this survey will inform efforts to strengthen the role and capacity of community organizations as essential partners within the mental health and substance use service system in BC.
