Salamanca Pedestrian Improvements

Traffic update

Installation of 'Zebra' Crossing

To help increase pedestrian comfort when crossing Salamanca Place, a zebra crossing is being installed on Friday 28 August 2020 (subject to rain), between the Parliament Lawns and the ‘Irish Murphy’s’ corner. The photographs and map below, show the site where the crossing will be installed.

The installation of the zebra crossing will commence at around 9 am, with works concluding by around 12 noon.  There may be some minor interruptions to vehicle movements and stop and go traffic management arrangements will be in place during this time. Delays will be kept to a minimum and may be of up to 5 minutes.

Traffic changes

On Friday 28 August 2020, the City of Hobart will be making adjustments to the intersection of Montpelier Retreat and Salamanca Place in Hobart. This change, which is part of the wider Salamanca Pedestrian Upgrade project, will mean that drivers on Montpelier Retreat approaching Salamanca Place will be required to ‘Give Way’ to road users on Salamanca Place. Previously, road users on Salamanca Place were required to ‘Give Way’ to road users exiting Montpelier Retreat.

With the recent closure of the former one-way link road through the Salamanca Lawns, the intersection of Salamanca Place and Montpelier Retreat now resembles a normal ‘T’ intersection, and these changes will make the intersection operate in the same way that normal ‘T’ intersections do.

In 2021, the City of Hobart will be making further changes at this intersection to improve pedestrian amenity, including introducing further pedestrian facilities.
