This was our first week at Reddit with our new CEO, my friend and cofounder Steve Huffman, back at the helm. And we’ve gotten right to work.
One of the many things we’ve heard from you, the community, is that you’re dissatisfied with our content policy. Many of you are upset by our lack of action against communities and content on our site, while many others think we’re ruining Reddit by taking too much action already and violating your free speech. It’s a fine line to walk, and we’re trying really hard to get better, listen to what you have to say, and have a real discussion about what to do moving forward.
So on Thursday, Steve (u/spez) shared his thoughts, some solutions for moving forward, and answered your questions.
Lots of other interesting things happened on Reddit this week, and we learned tons of fascinating facts. For example: Anyone know what year the oldest surviving porn video was made? Find out the year (and, yes, watch it if you want) below!
r/blowit can also teach you which new football stadium cost more than the entire trip to Pluto and how much money each person would have if the world’s wealth were equally distributed.
Did you know New Horizons got closer to Pluto than Earth’s north pole is from its south pole? The NASA scientists working on the New Horizons Pluto mission also stopped by Reddit to answer your questions, and we got to see the planets all together to scale—it’s, well, pretty insane. Another group of people who just want to see a world burn hypothesized on how we as humans could destroy Pluto, even going deep into the nitty gritty science of it.
Make sure you read if you want to learn a bunch of entertaining new euphemisms from old literature as well as see some of the very first ever nude photos and the oldest surviving pornographic film—from 1908! It features a French maid, because some things never change. Or maybe this was the origin?
Several redditors documented the progress throughout the day, including as it turned into a candlelit vigil at night.
Short answer: Really not good. 0v3rk1ll gives the full explanation here.
made rice pudding on a pressure pot. as soon as i took the pressure valve off, the ceiling got painted with about 2 cups of milk and sugar. |
The result is pretty stunning, and maybe a bit more than just a “log cabin.” If you’ve ever wondered what it would take to build your own house or cabin, this is one of the most in-depth r/DIY posts you’ll find, with 193 photos documenting the 4-year process (don’t worry, though, the end result is at the top so you don’t have to look at all of them if you don’t want to).
If this image doesn’t get the tears flowing, this explanation of it certainly will. Some people remembered some of his specific acts of greatness, and others shared their favorite memory from a Nintendo game.
The community over at r/squaredcircle, where all of Reddit’s biggest wrestling fans hang out, likes to make bets from time to time. And this week, Coldcoffees promised to dedicate all of his time for three days trying to fit in at r/mylittlepony.
But then a beautiful cultural exchange took place, in which he was enthusiastically welcomed, discovered the surprising similarities between the two communities, watched an episode of My Little Pony and shared his thoughts, and more.
As a result, for others wanting to experience new communities, hobbies, and fandoms they aren’t familiar with, there is now r/subswap. So go experience something new!
