December Newsletter A Message From Our CEO, Lisa Andrew As 2019 draws to a close, Silicon Valley Education Foundation has much to celebrate! Our recent highlights include the DreamMakers Dinner, which raised more than $840,000 for our STEM and college/career readiness education programs and advocacy. We are also grateful for the many donors who supported SVEF this week during #GivingTuesday. THANK YOU! During the summer, our Elevate [Math] program assisted over 4,000 students at 186 school sites in 32 districts. On average, students who participated increased their math proficiency by 85% or more, and entered the current school year more academically prepared and confident. This summer we also piloted our Computer Science Institute, which brought standards-based curriculum to 153 middle school students in three school districts. The program was especially effective in encouraging the girls who participated; surveys showed increases in girls’ interest in continuing their computer science education (by 7%) and in pursuing a computer-related career (by 14%). Throughout the year, SVEF also leveraged partnerships with the school districts in the East Side Alliance, along with San Jose State University and others, to continue the Spartan East Side Promise. This initiative provides a clear pathway for pre-K through college success, guaranteeing admission to qualified students from East Side schools. This year, 335 East Side Union High School students were admitted to SJSU specifically because of the Promise! Over the last four years, there has been a 22% increase in the graduation rates of LatinX students. SVEF has bold plans to build on our success in 2020. Increasing the depth, breadth, and impact of our math intervention and college readiness programs, expanding our new computer science institute to high school, and deepening our role as Silicon Valley’s leader in STEM education advocacy are just a few points of our three-year strategic plan. Please accept SVEF's heartfelt thank you for your continued support and partnership. We wish you a joy-filled holiday season and the very best for a prosperous New Year!
