Salamanca Pedestrian Improvements

Project update - 20 October 2020

The road and construction works along Salamanca Place are progressing well and we are starting to see how lovely this new space is going to look once completed and how it will really enhance people's enjoyment of the area. The final works between now and early December 2020 will include:

  • The completion of the final section of the pedestrian plaza adjacent to Salamanca Lawns.
  • The installation of new seating and the trial of umbrellas in the central zone of the pedestrian plaza.
  •  The installation of retractable and fixed bollards to support the safe operation of Salamanca Market.
  • New flush kerb along Salamanca Place.
  • The installation of a further ‘zebra’ crossing across Salamanca Place as shown below, which will connect the new plaza area to Retro Café.

Road closure on Salamanca Place

There is a planned lane closure on Salamanca Place, to eastbound vehicles between Gladstone Street and Montpelier Retreat from Monday 26th October to Friday 6th November.

The construction team will be doing some minor underground works in this area and reinstating the pavers once completed. The below map shows the section that will be affected.

There will be roadwork signs to guide drivers who come down Gladstone Street and want to turn right into Salamanca Place. The signage will help them to use the right turn into Castray Esplanade.

Bigger market planned for Saturdays

Tasmania's Own Market will be expanding along Salamanca Place on the 31 October 2020. The bigger market will now accommodate 150 stallholders and will also see a return to the original Salamanca Market trading times of  8.30 am to 3 pm each Saturday.

The road closure will now extend on Saturdays along Salamanca Place from the Silos end to the Gladstone Street intersection. The road closure will be in place from 5 am to 5.30 pm each Saturday.

Traffic will still be able to enter and exit Salamanca Place from Davey Street to the Gladstone Street roundabout.
