Big Plates for Big Projects yield Big Savings

As you know, NobelClad can produce some of the largest and widest clad plates in the world. What you may not know is when plates get heavy, we won't restrict the tonnage per piece like a roll bond clad producer might. In addition, plates for larger vessels can yield tremendous efficiency - saving our customers money and time in fabrication. So go ahead, design and fabricate a vessel from plates wide enough to eliminate a shell course, or plates long enough to eliminate a seam weld - the savings may surprise you.

There are a number of factors that influence the size of plates NobelClad can produce. Thickness, material type, material availability and explosive loading can all influence how big a plate we can make.

Back in 2010, NobelClad announced it had shipped an order which incorporated the largest clad plates ever manufactured using explosion welding technology. At 13.8 meters in length (542 inches), 3 meters in width (120 inches) and 72 millimeters in thickness (2.84 inches), the plates each exceeded 24 metric tons (53,000 pounds) and had an individual surface area of more than 42 square meters (450 square feet). The plates were used in equipment associated with a North American clean diesel fuel project. The 3 mm thick (0.12”) stainless steel cladding layer provides corrosion resistance during the aggressive diesel refinement process, while the alloy steel base metal offers higher strength and lower cost than would be available from solid stainless steel.

In September 2014, NobelClad set a record with 4,800 pounds of explosives used on each plate to bond a number of nickel alloy on carbon steel clads. NobelClad completed the project ahead of schedule and with the successful production of such large plates, was able cut fabrication, labor and inspection costs for the customer.

There are a few idiosyncrasies in ordering plates from NobelClad that our most frequent customers understand well. If you are newer to clad fabrication, providing equipment drawings to NobelClad (or at least the diameter and length), can allow us to help you devise a clad metal plate plan that takes the best advantage of our stock and capabilities. Working together, we can optimize the plate and seam layout to reduce cost and improve efficiency. Contact your NobelClad sales representative for more information about plate sizing.

Meet the Team
Ashley Custer
If you have ordered clad produced in NobelClad’s North American factory in the past few years, you may have spoken with Ashley Custer, Project Management Specialist. Ashley provides many of our customers with up-to-date information on their order status - from the time of order placement, through the production process and to delivery. We recognize how important getting our clad delivered to you on time is, so NobelClad has invested in dedicated resources to keep you up to date and resolve issues if they arise.

Ashley joined NobelClad in early 2013 and quickly become part of our team’s fabric. In talking with Ashley about her work, she said “I interface with the factory, the sales teams, forming companies, and customers to keep track of orders, troubleshoot, and expedite. I make sure we meet our customer’s expectations.”

When speaking with Ashley about what she enjoys about her work with NobelClad, she commented “working with my colleagues – they are dedicated and deeply knowledgeable. I am constantly learning something new.”

A globetrotter of sorts, Ashley attended BYU in Utah and graduate school in Australia. She is six US states away from visiting all 50 and one trip to Asia away from visiting all populated continents. “I intend to mark those few off in the next three years.” Ashley told us recently.

When not at work, Ashley is an avid reader, baker and enjoys spending time with family and friends. “I have seven adorable nieces and nephews who are a lot of fun and who are excellent baking buddies. I also love trying new recipes and making my coworkers and friends take on most of the calories.” Thank you, Ashley, for ruining our many attempted diets and New Year’s resolution with your delicious treats.

On your next clad order, don’t be surprised if Ashley is the one providing you updates or answering any questions you might have about status and delivery. If time allows, she might be able to share her fantastic cinnamon roll recipe with you.
