Improving primary care for Surrey's Indigenous population

Attendees at the Indigenous Primary Health and Wellness Home in Surrey

The Indigenous Primary Health and Wellness Home is the first clinic of its kind in Fraser Health.

The clinic is now offering culturally safe and holistic care to Indigenous people in Surrey.

“First Nations leaders have told us to improve health services for all of our people – those living at home and those living away from home,” said Grand Chief Doug Kelly, chair, First Nations Health Council. “Our citizens want care that reflects both our traditional teachings and the best of western medicine. The Surrey area is home to the largest Indigenous population in B.C. The First Nations Health Council appreciates the productive partnership between the First Nations Health Authority and Fraser Health. When First Nations are able to own and influence the decisions about our health and other services that impact our families and communities, the outcomes and successes will be positive. I look forward to seeing this good work move forward.”

Digital Education Program Channels Altruism to Boost Vaccine Literacy

Kids Boost Immunity Lessons Share Indigenous Storytelling and History

A free online learning resource for Canadian students is tapping into children's altruism to improve vaccine literacy and promote immunizations in developing countries. Kids Boost Immunity (KBI) uses a series of articles, videos and online quizzes linked to school curricula in science, health and social studies to encourage students from grades four to 12 to think about immunization in a global context.

A panel described the Kids Boost Immunity program to community health nurses at the FNHA’s recent 2019 Communicable Disease, Public Health and Indigenous Knowledge Exchange Forum.

March 4 was HPV Awareness Day! Learn more about this common virus.

“I strongly recommend that men and boys get vaccinated for HPV. It is important to know that there is a rise in HPV-related head and neck cancers in men. One way to reduce your risk of these cancers is to get vaccinated against the virus (HPV). Another is to use condoms, and avoid using commercial tobacco.” – Dr. Kelsey Louie, FNHA Medical Officer

“We know we can eliminate HPV-related cancers! Through prevention (vaccination), screening (pap testing) and treatment (effective follow up of abnormal results from screening), we can see an end to cervical cancer in our lifetimes. This is a real possibility being proven globally.” – Dr. Unjali Malhotra, FNHA Medical Officer, Women’s Health

For more information about the impacts of HPV, read Dr. Malhotra’s message here.
