It was in this turmoil: basketball, the first flutter of butterflies in my stomach and finding myself that I started to write poetry. Writing poetry was like finding a refuge. A neverland where I could release everything I had to keep quiet at home and on the court. In my verses, I could talk about my fears, my anger, my dreams.

Mentee Christiane Calixte Wins Women's Media Group Scholarship
Supporting the Next Generation of Media Innovators
We are thrilled to announce that Girls Write Now mentee Christiane Calixte has been awarded the 2026 Women's Media Group (WMG) Scholarship. A Girls Write Now mentee over the past four years, Christiane is a Brooklyn-based Caribbean American freelance writer, public speaker, and writing coach. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post and YR Media, and she is studying English and Creative Writing at Columbia University. The $2,000 scholarship was created in 2022 by Girls Write Now mentor and WMG member Nevin Mays to encourage young people committed to a career in media.

FLC Academy Programs
The mission of the Film at Lincoln Center Academy Programs is to support the next generation of film artists and critics, and to foster a film culture that encourages diverse storytelling and points of view. Designed for aspiring artists and critics early in their careers, the FLC Artists Academy and FLC Critics Academy offer tailored multi-day workshops during the New York Film Festival, providing real-world experience and mentorship from leaders in their fields. 2026 applications are now being accepted.
