Summer Reading Fun for Everyone Starts Friday, June 7!
Did you know your Guelph Public Library card is your passport to adventure? Step outside the ordinary to seek answers at your nearest library location and join a reading club this summer! Together, we’ll trek through the wilderness as we explore the wonderful world around us.

Starting on Friday, June 7, 2019, children from birth to 12 years old are encouraged to “Explore Guelph: Celebrate our Natural World” by visiting any Guelph Public Library location to register for this year’s TD Summer Reading Club! You will receive a free reading package which includes a booklet with stickers, a necklace, a limited edition button and of course, a reading log card to get you started! Track your reading throughout the summer, collect bead and buttons from every location and participate in one of our many special reading club programs.

In addition to the reading club registration being available at all locations, join us for these special kickoff events at the Main Library on Friday, June 7, 2019:
Storytime Extravaganza at 10:30 a.m. and Comic Juggler: Craig Douglas at 2:30 p.m.

Summer reading isn’t just for kids! Enjoy our newly re-designed teen programs too for 13 to 18 year olds. Are you ready to rock out at your library this summer? Participate in our Teen Reads “Libraries Rock” Summer Challenge starting on Friday, June 7 until August 24, 2019. This summer, learn how much fun libraries can be with open musical jam sessions, drumming and improv workshops, teen tech time, and so much more.

We also have a new and exciting program for adults, 19 years and older - an Adult Summer Reading BINGO challenge! Drop by any library location to pick up your Bingo card starting on Friday, June 7 and start reading to win amazing prizes. Complete a line for a chance to win! Submit your completed Bingo card (or if you’re a super eager reader – cards) to any library location by Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Whether you are a long-time participant or new to our summer reading programs, you will find great resources here at your library to help you create the best summer reading experience ever! Get Your Summer Read On!

Celebrate Indigenous Culture and Heritage on June 21, 2019
National Indigenous Peoples Day is held every year on June 21, the date of the summer solstice and longest day of the year. Guelph Public Library has a growing Indigenous collection at all locations. We invite you to explore the cultural diversity and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and read for reconciliation.

Here are some recent additions to the library's collection:

  • Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada

Check out the library's newest online eReource, Transparent Languages. Access over 100 online language courses, packed with pronunciation, speech, grammar, writing, and vocabulary-building lessons. All you need is a Guelph Public Library card.

This is the poster for the library's "How To Listen To Audiobooks and Podcast" event at the Main Library on Thursday June 13 from 2 to 3:30 pm. Registration is required.

Reading (or Listening) on the Go!
Audiobooks may mean only one format to you – novels on CDs. But we have a wealth of other audio formats and platforms including MP3s, eAudiobooks and Playaways. Our eAudiobook providers are Cantook Station, Cloud Library, Hoopla and Naxos Spoken Word, where you can find lectures, poetry, other language offerings, history, self-help and many other subjects. We also have talking book machines – VictorReader / Daisy players – with simple functions for visually challenged patrons. Check out the library's catalogue or visit any library location to learn more about our various audiobook formats!

Join fellow 20 to 30 somethings at the Albion Hotel for Trivia Night on Wednesday June 5 at 7 p.m. Test your knowledge on all things trivia. Come with a group or come on your own! Adults.

If you could recommend just one children’s chapter book to read this summer, what would it be? With our Summer Reading Clubs fast approaching, we need your help to choose your favourite children’s chapter book of all time. Is it a classic read or a new modern favourite? Thirty-two beloved titles, divided between classics and modern favourites, will face off against each other over the next five weeks to earn the title of “Guelph’s Favourite Children’s Chapter Book!” Get ready to vote for the books that are important to you, share why reading and storytelling matters, and decide which books you and your family will be reading this summer.

Voting begins on Monday, May 27, 2019 at the Main Library Children’s department or on the library’s Facebook page. Have your say and vote for your favourite children’s chapter book each week! The winning selection will be announced in July 2019.

Connect with your neighbours at the library!  Bring your family and friends to our East Side Street Party on Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event will be held our East Side Branch (1 Starwood Drive, Guelph). Have fun at the library:

  • Creating a unique boat and test it out on the Tinker Truck’s man-made river;
  • Singing and dancing with live music from children’s entertainer Mr. J;
  • Exploring a City of Guelph fire truck;
  • Learning about coding with the Code Mobile;         
    and so much more!

Don’t forget to register for our summer reading club too! Celebrate the start of summer and share your love of literacy at this rain or shine community street party!

Teen ETCH Book Launch Celebrates Guelph’s Creative Youth
Everyone is invited to celebrate the achievements of Guelph’s youth in the areas of writing and art. Guelph Public Library in partnership with Vocamus Press are excited to launch ETCH 2019 at the Guelph Public Library’s Main Library (100 Norfolk Street) on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 1 p.m. The Teen ETCH Anthology is an annual collection of the area’s best teen writing.

Meet local authors Kate Anderson-Bernier, Ed Butts and Carole Kennedy as they announce the winners - plus you’ll have the chance to purchase your own copy of the anthology for $20 a copy or 2 for $30.  Refreshments will be provided.

Guelph Public Library appreciates the continued support of Vocamus Press for publishing and highlighting the amazing talents of Guelph’s youth in this anthology for the sixth year running. Be sure to join us Saturday, June 8, 2019!
