Your monthly all staff email! It's time to get out the voteHi there,Welcome back to your new look staff email. You'll notice a couple of tweaks to the old format, including a much cleaner design, more focus on things coming up and a new section that celebrates those who have been presented with Values Rewards. This is one of my favourite times of the year. We're past the hectic welcome period and starting to really engage with students on a wide range of issues, from our work around careers support on campus through to an unexpected referendum. But it is also the time when we say hello to lots of new student staff. This week has seen them complete their inductions and they'll shortly be joining their individual teams, where I'm sure you'll all join me in giving them a warm welcome. Looking ahead, the agenda is going to be dominated by politics, both locally and nationally. Next week we have the 'No Platform For Hate Speech On Campus' referendum which has engaged students from across the political spectrum. While in December we go to the polls for a general election. That's why we've launched our voter registration campaign. Empowering students to change the world around them is one of our core aims but the timing of this election means there is a risk that their vote won't be heard. With the election taking place as students head off for the Christmas break, it's key that we engage them and ensure they can have their say, wherever they are on 12 December. So take two minutes to register yourself and then spread the word and tell your friends, colleagues and family to do the same. Together we can make sure the student voice is heard this election. Michael Bailey Coming up There are so many new faces across all teams, and we have been extremely excited to welcome our newbies to their roles. During the coming weeks, if you see a new starter struggle with their duties, please be patient and try to help them if you can! We know you're all going to make a great team to work with at the SU, and we can't wait to see you grow and achieve together. Good luck! This coming month we're looking to recruit new Supervisors and Duty Managers, and the roles are going live today. If you're passionate about working for us and you think you're ready to take on more responsibility within your area of work, then you can apply below. Sabbatical Officers The Sabbatical Officers have been preparing for the 'No Platform for Hate Speech on Campus' referendum, with a debate coming up on Friday 1 November, and voting taking place from Wednesday 6 to Friday 8 November. They're also excited for the first Student Executives meetings, that will be starting on 4 November. Venues Our Venues team have welcomed tons of new faces over the last couple of weeks, with inductions taking place yesterday and today for all roles. We've seen some success across our different venues, including our newest addition to the SU, Humpit, which has sold over 2000 pitas! A massive well done to the team for those sales. Tech inductions will be taking place on Saturday 2 November, so make sure you've signed up for them. Retail The Union Shop has spent the last few weeks recruiting for new Shop Assistants, a Shop Assistant Manager a Deputy Manager and Duty Managers, with all the successful candidates attending inductions this week. We're so excited to see all the new faces at the shop! Student Opportunities Student Opps have been busy, with our Helpdesk Assistants helping students settle in over these first few weeks of term. They've been supporting our brilliant Advice Centre in getting help for as many students as we can, as quickly as possible. They've also made sure our sports clubs and societies are able to put on a wide variety of events this term. Our Give It A Go programme has recruited a new student assistant Lauren Parker, who has settled great in her role! Marketing & Communications The Marketing & Comms team have some awesome new faces to welcome to the team. With Jake Fenner as our new Content Creator, we should be able to revamp our social media platforms for all sectors of the Union. Our new Photographers, Bill Robinson and Josh Biñas have already had their shadow shifts, and we can't wait to see the awesome shots they'll be taking of our events! Finance and Human Resources Finance and HR are as busy as always! Finance are moving towards the monthly account closing, so deadlines for submitting paperwork are tighter for everyone - but will enable the team to get the month end results sooner. Human Resources are having inductions for over 160 new student staff this week, who are getting trained in Bar, Security, Shop, Tech, Union Bus and Marketing & Communications. A massive thank you! As a Students' Union, all the work we do is based on five main values: Brave, Student Focused, High Quality, Inclusive and Trustworthy. Every single month we have outstanding staff that work extremely hard, ensuring that these values are represented across all sectors of the Union. Because of this we introduced the Values Rewards - a £5 gift voucher to spend in any of our venues, to say thank you for your hard work. This month, we've given Values Rewards to Bus Drivers, Security Stewards, Helpdesk Assistants and staff members in our Tech team, The Packhorse and Bar & Catering - you can check them all out below! Thank you for helping us make student life better at Royal Holloway. And finally... Here's a hilarious photo of our Bar Supervisor Robert Istas, enjoying his shift with Tommy Toast. We love to see you having fun at work - you'll have to share the joke Tommy was telling you to make you laugh that hard! After weeks of speculation, a general election has been called for 12 December, pending scrutiny from the House of Lords and Royal Assent. This means it’s incredibly important that you are registered to vote ahead of the polling day. If you're not registered, it literally takes five minutes so get it done! |
