We are delighted to open our doors once again to pupils and staff after the long summer break. There have been several important projects completed during the last few months including the creation of a new science laboratory. This brings the number of science labs to six. A teaching and learning pod has also been installed near the Pavilion to provide additional space for two wheelchair accessible classrooms, complete with locker storage, and multimedia functionality. The school has also increased the number of bicycle racks at locations around the campus as part of our Green Schools initiative to encourage environmentally friendly methods of transportation. We are most grateful to the Finance and Estates Bursar for managing these improvements. I should like to wish all members of the school community every success in 2021/22. Mr G A Forrest High School OlympiansCongratulations to past pupils Annalise Murphy (HSD, 2002-08) and Nicola Daly (HSD, 2000-06) who represented Ireland in the Tokyo Olympics during the summer in sailing and hockey, respectively. Both women demonstrated their dedication to sport as they competed with the best in the world. Their passion and tenacity were inspirational to all those who followed their progress through the games. We are incredibly proud of these High School past pupils and we wish them success and happiness in the future. Cricket Ireland SuccessThe 2021 season has proved a busy one for past pupil Orla Prendergast (HSD, 2014-20) and her team-mates on the Ireland womens cricket squad. After a long and frustrating wait through lockdown both Scotland and Holland visited for a bilateral series, both of which were won by Ireland, followed by the European T20 World Cup qualifiers in La Manga, Spain. Orla is now looking forward to the qualifiers for the 50 over World Cup which will take place in Zimbabwe in November. We wish her every success in future competitions. Form 4 InductionOn Monday 30 August Form 4 went to Airfield Farm in Dundrum for an induction day. Pupils were delighted to meet their friends again and to be divided up into their new form groups. They learned about the Transition Year programme and went on an interesting walk to see the animals at the farm. It was great day and a wonderful way to start the school year. Form 1 Sports InductionLast week The High School ran a very successful sports induction programme Form 2 Outdoor ActivityOn Tuesday Form 2 pupils spent the afternoon with their teachers taking a stroll around Bushy Park, chatting and enjoying ice cream with their friends to mark the beginning of the new academic year. It was wonderful to see pupils laughing and smiling with their peers on this bonding afternoon, free from masks in the fresh air. We hope that Form 2 pupils have a successful, productive year with many opportunities to build those important relationships that make their time at The High School so enjoyable.
