ICHCA NEWS
Monday 12 September 2016
Holman Fenwick Willan LLP, London
As the IMO announces “Connecting Ships, Ports and People” as the theme for World Maritime Day 2017, ICHCA International is pleased to invite you to attend The Ship-Port Interface, a practical one-day seminar in London, 12 September, bringing all the stakeholders together to explore how to improve safety, security and efficiency at this most critical hand-off point in the maritime supply chain.
Scheduled immediately after the 3rd session of IMO’s Sub-Committee on the Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC), attended as usual by ICHCA in its NGO capacity, The Ship-Port Interface seminar will provide a timely chance to review key legislative developments at IMO and elsewhere. This includes current work on safe mooring and ships lifting appliances, as well as reflecting on the first few months of the new IMO SOLAS VGM container weight rules that came into force worldwide on 1 July this year.
Tue 13 & Wed 14 September 2016
TT Club, London
The 76th meeting of the ISP - ICHCA's Technical Panel - takes place after the Seminar on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 September 2016 and is kindly hosted by TT-Club at their European office in central London. Members of the panel and observers are invited to attend.
ICHCA would like to offer warm congratulations to Javier Saavedra who has won the Safety Professional of the Year - International Practice Speciality Award given by the American Society of Safety Engineers Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS).
Released jointly by the World Shipping Council (WSC), the TT Club, the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA), and the Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF). This is a second Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document designed with the purpose of supporting the smooth implementation of the container weighing regulations that took effect globally on 1 July 2016.
Please give us your feedback by 31 August.
Now that the SOLAS VGM amendments are in force, we want to hear from you on how your business has approached implementation. Have you managed to implement the rules in all cases? If not, which issues have you faced?
We invite you to share your experiences here and we will take your feedback directly to the IMO for their consideration. All individual replies will be treated in strict confidence and only aggregated / neutral results will be shared.
Don't forget you can download this free Research Paper on the lashing of non-standardised cargo which considers the properties of the three most popular and commonly used types of lashing materials: chain, wire and fabricated web lashings.
The Paper was written by Capt. Peter D. Hull, Master Mariner, with Capt. Nic Paines AFNI, MRIN, MBACS, FCMS and Paul Auston and published by ICHCA.
ICHCA's Technical Adviser, Richard Brough, has written a piece in the latest OIML Bulletin on the repercussions of mis-declaring a container's weight.
See pages 21-23. Many thanks to OIML for their permission for us to share this bulletin.
REGULATIONS AND INDUSTRY NEWS
The new database of container tare weight data recently announced by the Bureau International des Containers (BIC) is now live, with more than half a million containers already uploaded and new files being added daily. Container owners and operators are encouraged to sign up now to upload their fleet files to the database, and shippers are invited to start using the data right away. Read more
FTA has released new guidance on the safe coupling and uncoupling and parking of commercial vehicles and trailers. Coupling and uncoupling actions are an integral part of the daily duties for many professional drivers. Tragically, each year there are a number of fatalities or serious injuries due to vehicle runaways or trailer rollaways. The cause is often because the individual in charge mistakenly believes that all brakes are engaged when they are not. This should not happen if simple procedures are followed.
Addressing the IMO Council, meeting for its 116th session at IMO Headquarters in London last July 7th, 2016, Mr. Kitack Lim has said:
"The maritime sector, which includes shipping, ports and the people that operate them, can and should play a significant role helping Member States to create conditions for increased employment, prosperity and stability ashore through promoting trade by sea; enhancing the port and maritime sector as wealth creators both on land and, through developing a sustainable blue economy, at sea”.
Initial planning is now under way for the COA’s 18th Members Meeting, taking place at the Hilton Hotel, Rotterdam, on Monday 14 November 2016 (the day before the Intermodal Europe 2016 exhibition).
