On July 7, 2017 the Province of BC announced a provincial state of emergency regarding the current wildfire situation. This is an unprecedented situation for our province, and one that is affecting many First Nations communities in the Interior Region.

During this stressful time, we at the FNHA are committed to sharing information and support with communities. Evacuations are underway in many areas, and with the hot, dry weather expected to continue, more families and communities may need to leave their homes for safety.

The FNHA recognizes and acknowledges the unique trauma First Nations evacuees may be currently experiencing, which goes beyond the threat of or loss of home and includes impacts to territory, plants and animals. Communities and families who have been affected are in our prayers an​d those who have chosen to stay behind are also in our prayers.

Please take care of yourselves and one another, and lean on the resources available to you to take care of your own mental wellness and that of your children and relatives. As communities and individuals, we all have our healthy ways of coping with stress & trauma – now is time to use them. Reflection, prayer, culture and ceremony can help.

Disasters like the current wildfires affect individuals in many ways. The emotional effects may show up immediately or appear weeks to months later. Here are some tips for recognizing and responding to trauma in children brought on by disaster situations.

It is important to understand that there is a natural grieving process following any loss and a disaster of any size can cause unusual or unwanted stress. If you are seeing any of these behaviors there are things you can do to support.

Last Friday, the Province of BC announced a provincial state of emergency regarding the current wildfire situation. This is an unprecedented situation for our province, and one that is affecting many First Nations communities in the Interior Region.

We want to raise our hands in gratitude to the many firefighters, response teams, frontline care providers and volunteers providing emergency services to keep our communities safe. Despite many of our FNHA Interior Region team members and their families being on evacuation alert, they continue to work around the clock to provide supports and the latest information to First Nations in the region. We thank all involved for their continued efforts.​

First Nations people have lived off the land since time immemorial. The FNHA would like to promote canning as one form of food preservation and we are currently developing a canning training curriculum and information resource to ensure that community members have the tools to preserve healthy foods in a safe way.

We would like to learn more from First Nations Elders and communities who may have been involved with traditional practices, food processing and preservation. We are also looking for traditional stories and recipes to be featured in the resource.
