Meet your Youth Council

Seven aspiring young leaders have been given the opportunity to help shape the future of Mitchell Shire and be a voice for the region’s youth.
The group was sworn in as Mitchell Shire’s Youth Council for 2021-2022 during Monday night’s Council Meeting.
During their 12-month term, the group will share their passions and ideas for young people and provide a youthful voice to feed in to the Mitchell Shire Councillors and the organisation.
Thomas Starkey will serve as Youth Mayor, Georgia Fletcher will serve as Youth Deputy Mayor and Trinity Marshall will be Youth Council Secretary.

EXPOSURE SITES Keep up to date on latest listings

We've had a small number of public exposure sites listed in the municipality.

Council supported Department of Health to set up two pop-up testing sites this week in Wallan. The regular testing sites in Wallan, Kilmore and Seymour also continue to operate.

It is more important than ever that we remain vigilant, practice good COVID-safe measures and make sure we get tested straight away if we have any symptoms at all.

Community awards nominations open

The Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony for 2022 will be hosted in Broadford by the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell.

Our Australia Day committee is calling for Australia Day Community Award nominations ahead of the 2022 Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony.

We know it has been quite difficult for community groups to meet or host events, so part of our celebrations will be highlighting the innovation and passion involved in online events or whatever your group got up to.

Nominations close 9am, 10 November and can be made on Mitchell Shire Council's website

Burning small pile of twigs
IS YOUR PROPERTY FIRE READY?

From Friday 1 October you will need a permit to burn off any piles, stumps, logs and vegetation larger than 75mm in diameter.

Here's a checklist to help you burn off safely:

  • All open-air burning requires notification to VicFire (1800 668 511)
  • Fires are not to be lit on days of Total Fire Ban, smog alert days or during the CFA declared Fire Danger Period
  • In many areas, including residential, you can only burn off on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but you need to let the VicFire line know to avoid unnecessary brigade call outs
  • Make sure you have a clear area around your burn and plenty of water available to control possible outbreaks

Find out more about burning off in Mitchell Shire on our website.

MAGPIE NESTING Avoid areas with swooping birds

Spring is in the air and it's that time of year where we need to take some extra care outdoors around magpies while they are nesting.

The best way to get through nesting season is to avoid known swooping areas for a few weeks.

If you've been swooped or have come across swooping birds, please visit the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's swooping map to submit your experience.

Other tips to avoid being swooped:

  • know your local swooping hotspots
  • avoid the area
  • move quickly, but do not run
  • cover your head with a hat, helmet or umbrella and consider drawing a pair of eyes on the back of your hat or helmet
  • do not harass or feed wildlife

You can make a report about problematic birds in Council parks using our Report It tool.

Draft Council Plan

We're calling for submissions to the draft 2021-2025 Mitchell Shire Council Plan.

Endorsed for release at Monday night’s Council meeting, the draft plan was developed with input from the community through pop ups, workshops, online surveys and a deliberative community summit earlier this year.

Based on the overarching drivers of climate change, pandemic response and recovery, population growth and financial sustainability, the plan outlines the strategic directives, key priorities and success measures across four themes: council, nature, built environment and community.

Submissions close at 12pm, Tuesday 12 October and can be made at Mitchell's Engaging Mitchell portal.

PYALONG BUS SHELTER Provide input on proposed location

We've been working  with the Pyalong school bus service to identify a preferred single bus shelter location to streamline the stopping of buses to a single point in the town centre.

The location in High Street, near the Town Centre Park, has been identified as meeting the needs of the four school bus routes servicing Pyalong.

We're now looking for input from the community about the proposed location.

Closes: 9am, Friday 8 October

The main purpose of this initial consultation is to test the ideas and vision that we have in the current draft document and to encourage you to think about the future development of the precinct and how we can collectively deliver on the vision.
