This year's Form 6 pupils delighted us with wonderful speeches and musical performances, making us laugh and walking us back through their last six years at The High School. These are the pupils who first wandered through The High School gates for the first time in 2011, the year Prince William married Catherine Middleton, and Captain America: The First Avenger was number one at the cinema box office. A lot has happened in the world since then. As our most senior pupils, they represent all that is best about our school: their kindness, diligence, and humanity mark them out as well-rounded young men and women and we are proud to send them out into the world as ambassadors of The High School. As always, the graduation ceremony was a night of nostalgic reflection surrounded by parents, teachers and friends. So we bid a fond farewell to the class of 2017 - a very special group of pupils indeed. Leinster Cricket Union Plate VictoryOn Tuesday 23 May the Senior 1st XI Boys cricket team played in the Leinster Cricket Union Senior Plate final against Sandford Park School having qualified by defeating St Columba's College in the semi-final. We batted first, with Zak Coghlan scoring 37 runs. Tristen de Beer hit a quick-fire 25 runs in the final overs. We ended the innings with a total of 126 runs. On the bowling side, Patrick Ryan got the vital two wickets of the opening batters. International Rowing SuccessRecently, myself and my four fellow team mates from The High School travelled to Belgium to compete in the Ghent International Rowing Regatta. It was a very successful event featuring clubs from all over Europe. We had trained especially hard for this regatta and our diligence paid off with our overall results: collectively we won 3 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze medals. We plan on winning a gold medal at the Irish National Championship in Cork at the end of July. Irish Olympian silver medalists, Gary and Paul O'Donovan, will also be competing in the championship. Green Schools AwardWhen the news came that The High School had been awarded its third Green Schools flag for water conservation we were all overjoyed. So, on 23 May we went to the Helix in Dublin City University (DCU) to get our long-awaited prize. We got to go into the theatre where we were presented with our flag. After the ceremony it was time to hop back in the taxi and make our way to school. Time Capsule OpeningThree years ago, HSD pupils put together a time-capsule in History class. They filled it with items of contemporary interest such as newspapers, magazines, and their favourite books. On completing Form 3 at HSD on Friday 26 May, pupils opened the time capsule and enjoyed a glimpse into their not-so-distant pasts. Form 4 End-Of-Year EventForm 4 pupils enjoyed a wonderful end-of-year activity day together at Glendalough, Co Wicklow on Monday 29 May. What a great send-off for this extraordinary group of pupils who thoroughly embraced all the educational opportunities that they were afforded by the Transition Year programme. St Peter's School Summer FeteSt Peter’s School is a school for young people with mental health difficulties and autism. It will be holding a Summer Fete on Saturday 10 June to raise much-needed funds to purchase playground and specialist equipment and to provide staff training. The fete will comprise a range of different stalls with a plant sale and children’s entertainment. Summer Drama Camp at The Hgih SchoolA Starcamp Summer Camp will take place at The High School from 8-12 August 2017. Contact www.starcamp.ie to book a place. Note for the diary: |
