Autumn Newsletter

Hi friends,

Welcome to the 2nd Newsletter of 2020. We encourage you to stay connected in any way possible to your sporting community and to us through the online platforms available.

This season is like no other before, so we have hoped to fill this newsletter with updates, advice and some things to do to keep us engaged, safe and well.

Please enjoy!

The 2020 Olympic Nomination Series has come to an end!

Over the past three months the Olympic Nomination Series of events have been delivered for Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun - across four states. These events have been run in conjunction with Member Organisations, their affiliates and their local Clubs. They have been run with immense dedication and commitment of time from Officials, Volunteers, Broadcast Partners, Staff, Athletes, Coaches and their support networks. Thanks to everyone involved, we couldn't have done it without you!

Since completing the Series on March 22 and then hearing days later that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics were being postponed, we had to suspend the team nomination process to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). Now revised date for the Tokyo Olympic Games (23 July - 8 August 2021) and Paralympic Games (24 August - 5 September), we are continuing the process with the AOC and hope to officially announce the team soon after the Easter Long Weekend.

Our CEO, Luke van Kempen sent out an update with more information last week, if you missed it you can view it here and be sure to subscribe on our website so you get all the updates in the future.

In the meantime why not head to Shooting Australia TV to watch all the competition finals and athlete interviews from the Olympic Nomination Series, or you can check out our Facebook page for photo albums and our website for our latest news.

Social media has, and will continue to be, a great source of connection but It is easy to get caught up in the news which seems to be everywhere, and can be overwhelming at the best of times. If you find yourself struggling to manage your consumption the AIS have put together some very helpful tips

Managing your news and social media consumption during COVID19

Coach Tip of the Season - Vladimir Galiabovitch

We asked our national high-performance pistol coach, Vladimir Galiabovitch, to give us some tips on what athletes of all abilities could be doing while the ranges are closed:

  • Increase the volume of aerobic fitness training. If possible, include specific static or dynamic exercises that relate to technical development: such as shot routine motions or static positioning and balancing.
  • Schedule training sessions with purposeful skill development: Volume of training should be at least 4 sessions per week to progress in development and include overload training (to be tired physically after the repetitions). In order to achieve this you need to have less breaks between sets and can use the ‘breaks’ to swap between your left and right arm as often as possible.

Exercise example: Rapid Fire Stage (25m Pistol):
Complete the Rapid Fire Stage sequence (7:3) for 1 minute without a break. Take note of how it feels for the first time. Try to repeat this exercise for 3-4 times with a 1 minute break in between. You can use this 1 minute break to complete the same exercise with your other arm.

  • Schedule and cycle days off (maximum 2 – 3 days) when you can completely relax and enjoy life. Remember, progress will only occur after at least 3 months of consistent training and 6 months is a minimum to make your developments permanent.
  • Attend as many mental training sessions as possible.

Eating for Wellness - Elaine Bo (VIS Sports Dietitian)

With the sudden changes brought about by the coronavirus, there’s no doubt that all aspects of our routine have been affected. As we adapt to a new ‘normal’, staying physically and mentally healthy is a priority. If your training load has dropped or you are less active overall, give some consideration to the portions of your meals, in particular the carbohydrates (which would otherwise normally provide your muscles with fuel). Simply increase the portion of vegetables, and ensure a palm-size portion of meat / chicken or fish, while choosing high-fibre carbohydrates for satiety.

Here's a recipe you might like to try, especially as the weather gets cooler!

Season Recommendation

We asked Adam Sachs, Shooting Australia's High Performance Director for his top read during all the 'extra down time' we're getting. He says "(Legacy) speaks to the culture piece that we have been trying to progress throughout this cycle". Check it out and let us know what you think!

Instagram pic of season

Alison's caption captures the attitude elite athletes should aspire to have in regards to performances that might not have been necessarily what they had hoped, using every result as an opportunity to grow!

We love seeing and sharing your pics, make sure you tag @shootingaus in your next one!

We have also been filling our Instagram with 'Tips & Tricks' from the athletes about how to stay active and safe in this new environment, check it out here.

There are a lot of unknowns right now, but one thing we know is that staying connected is good for everyone. We hope you enjoyed this newsletter. We love hearing from you so please feel free to jump onto Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or simply hit reply,

Stay safe, stay well and stay connected
