CFC Faculty Update October 2017 No Images? Click here WCU's Commons for Teaching and Learning Excellence![]() Greetings,There is a tendency in public service to put our heads down and to work for the best in our own domains. In higher education, this gets particularly easy to do in a month like October. We are often juggling a number of professional conferences or writing obligations. We are often thinking about the successful conclusion of this semester and the successful launch of the next. And, it is a time of beauty and transition that gives us moments in the cool air and fall colors to relax after the various sprints that come at the beginning of the year. It is important to have reminders that all of us are a part of making our university and our world better and that Western Carolina needs your help and wisdom as we wend our way into our next adventures. In our newsletter this week we highlight some of those opportunities. We hope that you will be able to join us in our mutual work of learning and service. We hope that this newsletter will be helpful. Watch your mailbox in the coming weeks for opportunities to subscribe to specialty newsfeeds that will be more curated and focused. We would like to get to the point where we only send out information that you want to see. As always, we actively seek your input and stand ready to listen and assist. With thanks for all you do, Martha Diede, PhD Director, Coulter Faculty CommonsThe CFC is currently undergoing renovations and has temporarily relocated to HL166. Call or email to make an appointment and be certain that we have someone available to help you. Student Learning Outcomes WorkshopsSpecifically addressing methods for understanding and assessing student learning outcomes in both courses and programs, this workshop will focus on articulating and matching program level and course level student outcomes to the curricular structure. We ask that all participants bring specific materials upon which they can work and suggest that teams of program coordinators and or instructors in similar disciplines come in groups if possible. The Framework is based off the Quality Matters Rubric and meets the best practices of course design. This in turn reduces the administrative overhead of developing a course and provides the greatest opportunity for student success. The Spring 2018 courses have been populated with the new framework and all new courses going forward will have this add automatically. However, if instructors have a course that they would like to copy forward, this can still be accomplished by using the Course Copy request form https://wcu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8IVpBSbhRfvOoEl. Student Assignment ReceiptsThe LMS Team gets quite a few questions regarding if students have turned in assignments. With our last upgrade, there is a new feature; the Student Assignment Receipt. This will allow instructors to see what day and time assignments were submitted by a specific student. Below are the steps. 1. In your course, in the Grade Center and Full Grade Center. 2. Under the Reports menu, select Student Receipts. 3. Enter in the specific student username and press the Go button. Students can also see when they have successfully submitted an assignment through My Grades. If the assignment shows a green circle with a white exclamation point, the assignment was submitted successfully. If you have any questions, regarding this new feature, please do not hesitate to askCFC Intensive Training Sessions on Blackboard CollaborateInstructors who are working with us to create virtual classroom experiences are reporting success with Blackboard Collaborate when used as a part of their course sessions.
