The Youth Council, which is made up of seven enthusiastic people between the ages of 13 and 24 years, is being recognised for their ongoing efforts to tackle youth mental health.

The winner will be announced at the Awards Presentation Gala Dinner in Flemington on 10 May. Good luck!

DECISION MADE ON GAMING MACHINES EGM application opposed by Council

At a recent Special Council Meeting, Councillors voted unanimously to oppose the application by Hogan's Hotel in Wallan for a further 20 electronic gaming machines (EGM). The decision follows an independent Social and Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA).

Council will now make a submission to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR), and we encourage community members to view the application and make a submission as well.

ANIMAL CRUELTY IN MITCHELL SHIRE New arrangements for animal welfare emergencies

We’ve introduced some changes to how we deal with animal welfare issues here in Mitchell Shire. The RSPCA is now the primary contact for people to report urgent animal concerns, including emergencies and animal cruelty.

The change has simply been introduced to benefit animals in critical need. Therefore, we are encouraging community members to report urgent animal concerns directly to the RSPCA for investigation.

Don't worry, we take the issue of animal cruelty very seriously and we will still assist the RSPCA on the ground as needed. We will also continue to provide other local animal services including investigations of nuisance complaints, dog attacks and reports of wandering dogs, cats and livestock, and Council will also continue to operate its after-hours animal ranger emergency service and operate the pound, responsible pet education services and animal registration.

If you're keen to see the Community Garden at the Broadford Living and Learning Centre return to its former glory, then head along to the Public Meeting on 26 March to see how you can help re-establish this garden area.

This initial meeting is to hear what you want from the Community Garden, what expertise and experience you have, and then we can begin to put plans into place.

This is an exciting opportunity, and we need the community’s help in a variety of ways to help re-establish this garden area.

BUSINESS SURVEY If you're a small business owner, keep an eye on your Inbox

We are inviting businesses and service providers in the municipality to take a quick survey which will help us understand a little bit more about your business.

By giving us an insight in to how and why you do things the way you do, we can create projects, events and initiatives to help it thrive.

If you’re a small business owner, keep an eye on your inbox for the Mitchell Business Survey (it will be sent by Urban Enterprise). If you haven't heard from us, but think you should have, get in touch and we can add you to our list.

NEW OVAL WORKS Wallan SC's new oval under construction

There's been a bit of action happening at Wallan Secondary College of late, with the construction of the college's new oval now underway.

So far, the site has been cleared and earthworks completed, conduit for the oval lighting has been installed and the lights are set to go in in April. Irrigation works have just commenced, and following that, drainage works will get underway.

This is a joint partnership between Council, Wallan Secondary College and Department of Training and Education, and is on track for completion in May.

There's a few other Capital Works projects in the pipeline that will be happening across the shire, so stay tuned.

FLOOD STUDY Help us learn more about the flooding patterns of our region.

The Sunday Creek and Dry Creek Flood Study is underway.

We are on the hunt for local images, stories and flood data to better understand local flood patterns. If this sounds like something you can help us with, come along to one of our Drop-In Sessions this week to talk all things flood study.

The drop-in sessions will be held at Pyalong Neighbourhood House (Thursday 21 March, 6pm-8pm) and at Broadford Council Chambers (Saturday 23 March, 10am-12pm).

Show us your photos, share flood data and help us understand the way the Sunday Creek and Dry Creek Flood catchment reacts to heavy rainfall.

OPEN DAYS AT KILMORE + SEYMOUR LEISURE CENTRES

With the Kilmore Leisure Centre pool back up and running after a lengthy closure, we wanted a way to say thank you to residents for their patience during that time.

We know it was a big inconvenience, so we are going to throw the doors open to both our leisure centres for a free Open Day to allow residents to reacquaint themselves with their pools.

Kilmore Leisure Centre's open day will be on 10 April, and Seymour Sports and Aquatic Centre's will be on 12 April. The events are free, and there will be pool inflatables.

Have your say on outdoor fitness station designs

We have received a grant to install outdoor fitness equipment stations at Hadfield Park, Wallan, and Hudson Park, Kilmore. The image above is similar to the equipment that we're planning to install in Wallan.

Head over to Engaging Mitchell to take the short survey which will help us finalise a design for the outdoor fitness equipment stations.

Engaging Mitchell is your platform to have a say on what happens around Mitchell Shire. Before we make any big decisions, we often like to consult with the community to get their thoughts. Visit the website to see how you can get involved.
