Science Week

As part of Science Week 2020 Form 3 pupils participated in Geeks Unleashed, an on online project in partnership with Science Foundation Ireland.  It involved a conversation between primary and secondary school pupils all over Ireland with
seven Irish manufacturing research scientists.  The aim of the project was to show young people the type of careers that are available in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The researchers had expertise in Robotics, 3D Printing, Sustainable Manufacturing, Data Analytics, and Water Research.  Pupils began by watching a video made by six scientists.  Then they compiled a list of questions for the scientists who answered them in a follow-up video.  It was a very worthwhile and educational experience.  Form 2 pupils also spent the week studying astronomy and gave presentations about Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, and Triton.  Others were busy studying what constitutes a food web, which is a system of interlocking and interdependent food chains.  They made posters inpired by what they had learned.  This lovely illustration of a food chain was drawn by Faye O'Hare.

TCD Gold Medal Award

Congratulations to past pupil Katie O’Connor (HSD, 2010-16) who has been awarded a Gold Medal in Mathematics by the Board of Trinity College, Dublin.  This medal is awarded to undergraduates who show exceptional merit in their final degree examinations.  We offer Katie our warmest congratulations on this significant achievement and wish her every success in her academic career.

Form 4 Craft

As part of Science Week and inspired by local wildlife these repeat pattern prints were made by pupils in Form 4.  These observational drawings were made from real life models of the flora and fauna found on the school grounds using fine liner pens. When duplicated the pattern will repeat infinitely.  The collection of mesmerising prints are on display in the Dining Hall for a limited time only.

Christmas Card Competition

Pupils are invited to enter an art competition to design a High School Christmas card which will be sold in school in aid of the Crumlin Medical Research Foundation at Our Lady's Children's Hospital.  This exciting charity project is a collaboration between the Transition Year Enterprise class and the Art Department. It is free to enter and all entries are welcome. You can submit designs to the Office or email them to to art@highschool.ie on or before Monday 23 November.

Team Hope Shoebox Advent Appeal

As Team Hope are not accepting physical shoeboxes on account of Covid-19, we will have to do things differently this year.  Instead we hope to raise money for Team Hope in the school. Team Hope will be using the money raised in their appeal to arrange for shoeboxes to be made in the recipient countries this Christmas.  We are asking pupils to "Work for Team Hope" during the season of Advent (for example by doing helpful chores at home) to raise the money to fund a shoebox (€20 according to Team Hope) either individually or with another pupil ("Share a shoebox").  We will be organising a non-uniform day and creating a "fundraising wall" in the Reception area to track progress.  Pupils who raise €20 will have a "brick" with their name on it added to the wall.  Form 4 pupils will promote the appeal and collect funds at Senior and Junior Assembly in the week beginning 1 December.

HSD Past Pupil News

Congratulations to Louise Dukes (HSD, 2009-15) whose illustrations feature in this gorgeous rhyming book which was written by Rachel Browne.  The story follows Bunny who has been selected by an Irish girl for a Team Hope Shoebox.  The box arrives in Africa where a little girl is just delighted to have a new little bunny.  This book is a great way of teaching young Irish children to be generous.  All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the work of Team Hope.

Form 1 Hockey Challenge

Form 1 pupils completed their Hockey Ireland skills challenge on Saturday morning. This fun award is to encourage pupils to get active and develop their sporting abilities completing a skills circuit with an opportunity for everyone to earn a Certificate of Hockey Skills Award.  Well done, girls - you aced it!

Rugby Training

It has been a term like no other: pupils are missing sporting competitions that are such an important part of school life.  Regardless, our pupils are still training and working hard, honing their skills, and maintaining peak physical fitness.

Form 1 Baking

Pupils in Form 1 had a very successful baking class in Home Economics last week, where they learned how to make a sponge cake.  How delicious they look too!  Well done, everyone.
